Protecting Those Without A Voice
The APD Animal Cruelty Unit stands to investigate, pursuit offenders, and fight for those who cannot speak for themselves. And for those who hurt animals, we have no problem putting your actions on full display.
On August 31, 2026, APD officers responded to 13625 Coomer Path regarding two dogs living inside an extremely hot and unsanitary garage without adequate access to food or water. One dog was found deceased and severely underweight, while the other dog was found underweight and chained in an area with accumulated feces and urine. The deceased dog died from heat exposure, potentially compounded by dehydration and poor body condition. A third dog was also on the property. The two living dogs (“Smart” and “Jane”) were immediately provided with food and water and taken to Austin Animal Services (AAS) for evaluations. They were recently adopted and are making full recoveries.
The APD Animal Cruelty Unit conducted their investigation and arrested Nelsen Egwu for Cruelty to Animal related offenses (3rd Degree Felony and Class A Misdemeanor).
If you know of any animals, being abused or neglected, please call 9-1-1. You may also email the unit directly at [email protected].

When Austin Police (APD) Air Support flies over, you don’t even have to look up at the sky—you can hear it coming! 😂🚁
But apparently, that sound is different for everyone. Is it a “whoosh,” a “whomp-whomp,” a “chop-chop,” or something completely different? 🚁😂
We asked around, and the answers were all over the place! Apparently, there’s no universal way to describe the sound of an APD helicopter flying overhead.🚁😂

We’re proud to announce Officer Smart as 2025 Patrol Officer of the Year! Officer Smart has spent the last seven years in the Downtown Area Command (DTAC). His tenure in a highly operational unit, such as DTAC nightshift, is remarkable, and lends itself to the incredible amount of experience and community connections he possesses.
DTAC routinely sees new officers, and Officer Smart can always be counted on as a de-facto field training officer of sorts for those unfamiliar with the unique policing downtown Austin requires. He does this formally when tasked to do so, but also informally by coaching and mentoring officers on known problem areas, known suspects, crime trends, etc. Within the past year he has taken an active role in mentoring some of the officers who have quickly become some of the most productive officers in all of DTAC. Officer Smart’s seniority does not stop him from being just as proactive. In 2025, Officer Smart authored 238 offense reports; 103 of these were custody arrests which he made. These include multiple arrests for DWI, Possession of Controlled Substance, Assaults, and Firearms related offenses. Additionally, Officer Smart consistently produces the most thorough and well-written reports on the shift for which he routinely earns praise from investigative units.
His work product never declines, and he always maintains a high degree of professionalism as a shift leader. This speaks volumes to not only his positive attitude, but also his resilience as an officer. Congratulations, Officer Smart!

Congratulations to Officer Pistone with the David 300s (Southwest Austin) for earning 2025 Patrol Rookie of the Year! A common theme with Officer Pistone is her proactive approach to policing. She frequently self-initiates calls that result in firearms being removed from the street, arrests for felony drug charges, and the removal of intoxicated drivers. She made 38 DWI alone arrests in 2025! Additionally, when she responds to 9-1-1 calls, she consistently takes charge, serves as the lead officer, and makes the arrest.
Officer Pistone is setting a strong example for newer officers by demonstrating what it takes to be an effective patrol officer. Regardless of assignment or time of day, she handles calls confidently and has already emerged as a leader in her short time as an officer. Congratulations, Officer Pistone!

APD teamed up with Dell Children’s Medical Center for the 11th annual Super Hero Day, a beloved tradition that brings joy to patients and families when they need it most. Officers, physicians, and staff suited up as heroes and villains alike for a day packed with excitement from start to finish.
From rappelling down walls to “save the day" to walking the halls to meet some of the bravest Austinites out there - patients watched the magic unfold and got to meet their favorite characters.
Thank you to everyone who helped make this day unforgettable. Sometimes, being a hero means showing up, lifting spirits, and making someone's day a little brighter. 💫

Before they take the oath, they take the run. 💙
This morning, the Austin Police (APD) 156th Cadet Class took part in the long-standing Chief’s Run - a powerful tradition symbolizing unity, commitment, and the journey ahead. Joined by Chief of Police Lisa Davis, 36 cadets ran from the south end of the Congress Avenue Bridge to the Texas State Capitol Peace Officers Memorial.
As they crossed the finish line, they’re one step closer to becoming Austin Police Officers. Tomorrow, they’ll officially be commissioned, but today was about reflection, resilience, and the bond they’ve built along the way.
We are incredibly proud of these cadets and all they’ve accomplished. The future of APD is strong. Think you have what it takes? This could be you. Join the next generation of Austin Police at APDRecruiting.org
