🔴 BREAKING SPACE WATCH: MYSTERIOUS BRIGHT OBJECT APPEARS NEAR THE SUN IN NOAA GOES-19 IMAGERY ☀️☄️ Watch: live.spacetracker.org Could this be a small comet, a near-Sun asteroid, or something else? SpaceTracker investigates an intriguing observation. October 18, 2026 | SpaceTracker Science Report 🔭 THE OBSERVATION An unusual point of light appears southeast of the Sun in white-light imagery recorded by NOAA's GOES-19 CCOR-1 solar coronagraph. Image timestamp: October 17, 2026, 21:15 UTC Instrument: GOES-19 Compact Coronagraph-1 Observed location: Approximately 7 solar radii from the Sun's centre, based on an initial image measurement. The object appears as a compact bright point near the lower portion of the coronagraph's occulting disk. 🌟 WHY IS THIS INTERESTING? An initial comparison with a star map did not identify an obvious major bright star at the observed position. However, NOAA confirms that hundreds of fainter stars can pass through CCOR-1 images. A detailed stellar comparison is therefore still necessary. ☄️ POSSIBILITY ONE: A SMALL COMET This is an important possibility to investigate. Solar coronagraphs have discovered thousands of comets passing close to the Sun. In April 2026, NOAA's CCOR-1 instrument observed comet C/2026 A1 (MAPS) during its close solar approach. Could another small comet now be crossing the instrument's field of view? To determine that, scientists would need to measure its trajectory over multiple exposures and look for evidence of a coma or developing tail. 🪨 POSSIBILITY TWO: AN ASTEROID Another possibility is a small asteroid reflecting sunlight as it passes through the inner solar system. Such an identification would require a matching predicted orbit or repeated observations sufficient to calculate its movement. A bright point alone cannot establish that the object is an asteroid. 🔬 WHAT DOES THE EVIDENCE SHOW? The visible feature has not yet been positively identified. Its appearance is consistent with several explanations, including a background star, a small comet or an optical effect. There is currently no verified orbital trajectory, physical size or distance for the point. This is an observation under investigation, not a confirmed new comet or asteroid discovery. 🛰️ THE NEXT SCIENTIFIC STEP SpaceTracker recommends comparing the October 17–18 GOES-19 observations with NASA/ESA SOHO LASCO imagery and performing precise astrometric measurements using NOAA's original FITS data. Matching independent observations would provide much stronger evidence of a real object travelling through space. One bright point. Several scientific possibilities.
