8 months ago, I wrote a dissertation from the perspective of a 25-year Melee/platform fighter player who intimately understands the mechanic on why floorhugging is a net negative for Rivals 2. Didn’t feel compelled to post it before but here it is
docs.google.com/document/d/1…
I’m seeing a prevailing sentiment from FH-Defenders be that it would be very hard to deal with certain moves without FH, but… if a move(s) is so strong it requires a mechanic that, while inactionable, allows you to negate most of the hitstun, isn’t the move itself bad design??
I’m really not sure how to explain my disdain for a mechanic that exists to protect someone from the consequences of a mistake, and then the idea of adding moves to the game that are so incredibly powerful that it needs said mechanic to exist even in a vaguely healthy manner.
I feel like I’m banging my head against the wall arguing like this, because I’ve seen really obvious problems in so many games in the past get passes from contrarians, and then when the time has passed, *obviously* everyone knew in retrospect that it was an issue all along.
This does go back to my idea, however, of if a move is far too overtuned in the above context, then why not have it specifically be FHable? I feel like singling out moves for the mechanic is still a far better solution than making it a sweeping universal mechanic.
Alright, the items are successfully shipped, and the transactions are complete.
Congratulations to CartsandCardboard for winning the Miyamoto-signed New 3DS auction!
Made a big dumb writeup about my thoughts on the state of #RivalsofAether2 #RoA as well as Floorhugging specifically, and wanted to share it:

If you're into Rivals, I'd appreciate if you could give it a read.
If you're not, uhhh don't worry about it lol
Seems we’re on the last 24 hours of this. It’s been one wild ride, to be sure.
But now I gotta sweat over how to successfully get this thing to the winning bidder, and also make sure the transaction closes successfully, of course. Lot of work to fret over there, to be sure.
Alright, this is a big one, and I have thought about this for a while, but I've went and put my prize 3DS, from the 2015 Nintendo World Championships, up on eBay. It was signed by Shigeru Miyamoto himself!

Alright, so just as an update, I updated the listing about how the delivery will be handled. I may do registered mail, but there is a very good chance that I will instead opt for a personal, in-person delivery. Probably good for dealing with any potential problems, yeah?

Just to make this clear, the auction is JUST for the 3DS, and also those trading cards in the second picture. The trophy itself isn't part of this, and was only used to help serve as a 'proof of validity,' as it were. Sorry if anyone was misled by that part.
