BREAKING: Hedera developers have introduced a portable global identity standard for AI agents. The goal is to give agents a persistent, verifiable identity that can move across different networks, registries and communication protocols. Today, agent identity is fragmented. An agent operating through MCP, A2A, a blockchain account, an API service or a decentralized registry can exist under completely different identity systems. The new standard creates a universal identifier that remains consistent across those environments while still mapping back to the agent’s native protocol, registry or account. That creates a common identity layer for: • Cross-protocol discovery • Routing and communication • Cryptographic verification • Credentials and attestations • Persistent identity across systems No central issuing authority is required. The framework supports deterministic identities derived from public inputs, as well as self-sovereign identities based on existing W3C decentralized identifiers. The standard also separates identity from reputation. The identifier establishes who the agent is and how it can be resolved. Trust, performance history and reputation can then be layered on through credentials, attestations and external reputation systems. The draft is known as HCS-14: Universal Agent ID Standard.
