It is totally awesome to see a comet from orbit. The perspective of rising through the atmosphere on edge is truly unique from our vantage point. The comet tail is still too dim to see with your eyes, but it is heading towards the sun and growing brighter every day.
This comet is known as C2023-A3 or Tsuchinshan-ATLAS. @dominickmatthew used math (go figure) and our orbital geometry to figure out where to point our cameras and was the first to get a good photo (xitter.cf/dominickmatthew/status…).
Using Matthew’s technique, I will photograph every day to see what develops in the tail structure. Currently, there appears to be a forward directed “tail” that I am not certain is real or an artifact from shooting through 4 window panes. Time will tell if this structure brightens. Stay tuned.

Wildfires from orbit.
What first looked like bright street lighting really turned out to be wildfires in Australia. Taken today (Sunday September 9th) at 16:00 UT, these fires are in the North East region, the largest near Talaroo and the smaller one near Clermont.
It’s amazing how bright the scalloped fire lines are from orbit. I hope these get under control soon.

A traveled to the top of a Volcano in Hawaii to capture this: Saturn briefly covered by the moon. One of the most difficult shots I’ve captured and a bucket list moment, this event gave me a new perspective on the solar system.
I’ll have it available in print for a short time.

Reds and greens from the aurora as well as city lights reflect off the service module solar arrays with the Milky Way core behind the space station. The solar arrays and service module are bathed in a light horizon blue from a sun about to rise behind the camera.
Single image taken from a timelapse (will post timelapse video soon).

Timelapse video of aurora streaming behind Starliner taken from a Dragon window with Butch and Suni in the window of Starliner. Their flashlights light up the cabin.

We have been looking at aurora out the cupola windows a lot lately. Starliner was doing some testing today so we decided to check it out from the Dragon windows. Timing was great for the aurora to line up nicely with Starliner’s service module thrusters.

In-space 📸 of @Boeing Starliner’s first-ever astronaut mission!
Taken June 7, these satellite images show the spacecraft docked to the International Space Station (ISS).
This type of imagery collection, known as non-Earth imaging (NEI), is a breakthrough capability that enables Maxar to support critical space domain awareness missions for government and commercial customers.

Such a clear, hi-def view of the eclipse. Gives a real sense of the traveling darkness.

So happy to finally share this shot with you: a conjunction of the ISS and the moon. This shot required meticulous planning and precise timing to achieve, and the full image (in the second post in the thread) is one of my all-time favorites.

The shot of a lifetime, and the forecast success I will never forget. Upward lightning bolts from Shiprock yesterday... I could not believe what I was watching in front of my eyes! The gamble of the 11hr drive paid off and then some! #nmwx @NewMexico

This man who placed his telescope in the middle of a Brooklyn road to show strangers what Saturn looks like has done more for traffic calming than any elected official in the lower 48. Let’s protect this man at all costs.
