August 6, 1945. A 29 year old engineer is walking to work in Hiroshima on the last day of a three month business trip. He's packed. He's going home to his wife and baby son tomorrow. He looks up and sees a bomber high overhead. Something small falls from it. Then the sky turns white. His name was Tsutomu Yamaguchi. He designed oil tankers for Mitsubishi, and he'd been sent to Hiroshima to work at the company's shipyard. He was about two miles from where the bomb exploded. The blast threw him off his feet. It burst his eardrums. It burned the left side of his upper body, his face and arms. For a while he couldn't see. He spent the night in an air raid shelter in a city that no longer existed. The next morning, badly burned, he found two of his coworkers who had also survived. Together they made their way through the ruins to a train station and got on one of the few trains still running. They were going home. Home was Nagasaki. He got back on August 8, covered in bandages. His family barely recognized him. Doctors treated his burns. Most people would have stayed in bed. On August 9, Yamaguchi reported to work. He was sitting in the Mitsubishi office in Nagasaki, telling his boss what had happened in Hiroshima. How one bomb had wiped out an entire city. According to Yamaguchi, his boss told him that was impossible. That he must be out of his mind. And at that moment, through the window, the room filled with the same white light. The second atomic bomb had just exploded over Nagasaki. Once again, Yamaguchi was about two miles away. The blast tore the bandages off his burns. The office was wrecked. And somehow, again, he lived. He rushed home terrified of what he'd find. His house was destroyed. But his wife and son had survived too. They had gone out looking for burn ointment for him and were sheltering in a tunnel when the bomb hit. Treating his injuries from the first bomb may have saved them from the second. He was sick for a long time. His hair fell out. He had fevers and infections. But he recovered. He went back to work, raised a family, and lived a normal life for decades. He rarely talked about it publicly. Hundreds of people are believed to have lived through both bombings. But in 2009, the Japanese government officially recognized Yamaguchi as a survivor of both, the only person ever formally given that status. Late in life he finally started speaking out against nuclear weapons. He even addressed the United Nations. He died in 2010 at the age of 93. He was hit by the only two atomic bombs ever used in war. And he outlived the century they were dropped in.

"No one on this team is going to play 40 minutes, and no one's gonna average 30 points. It ain't gonna happen... This may be a team with six or seven in double figures." "That's a lot of wins if that's the case." This is the most confident I’ve heard coach cal on an Arkansas team yet, he’s been confident in players but never this confident on his team. Seems like ark will have a lot of depth which is something they’ve been missing.

Today is the final day without scheduled NFL or Division I football for two straight months. When you wake up Thursday, a stretch of 61 straight days with at least one football game await, until there is nothing on the calendar Dec. 1 or 2.

The Atlantic just made it to September 21 without a hurricane. Last time that happened? 1914. Fay almost ruined it last night. It hit 70 mph. Hurricane strength is 74. Now it’s falling apart, and nothing else is expected for at least a week.

Having a reason to get up in the morning cuts your risk of dying by more than half. A 2019 JAMA study of nearly 7,000 adults found that people with the strongest sense of purpose had the lowest mortality, and the effect was independent of wealth, health, exercise, and depression. Purpose does not mean ambition. It means feeling that your daily actions matter to something beyond yourself. A grandparent raising a garden. A retired teacher who tutors. A caregiver who shows up every morning. The research does not measure achievement. It measures the feeling that what you do connects to something. The biological pathway runs through every system the body uses to stay alive. People with a sense of purpose sleep better, have lower inflammatory markers, take their medications, show up for screenings, and maintain social ties. Each of those individually lowers mortality. Together, they compound into a survival advantage that is larger than the sum of its parts. The opposite is also in the data. People who lose purpose, through retirement without a replacement, the death of a spouse, or the end of a career they defined themselves by, show a rapid decline in health that cannot be explained by aging alone. The body seems to treat purposelessness as a signal that the organism is no longer needed. Nobody writes "sense of purpose" on a prescription pad. The research says it belongs there. pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/3112…

This heat dome is literally making the atmosphere bulge. Weather balloons found the halfway point of the atmosphere higher than ever recorded in September at 18 locations. Some of those records go back to 1948. In Birmingham, you had to go almost 4 miles straight up just to get above half the atmosphere. That’s how powerful this thing is.

The strongest heat dome on Earth right now is sitting on Tennessee. Heat makes air swell. The hotter the dome, the higher the whole atmosphere stacks up. Over Tennessee, the halfway point of the atmosphere is 19,665 feet up. That is higher than over the Sahara. Higher than the Middle East. Higher than anywhere else on the planet. Nashville hit 100 yesterday and is forecast to do it again today.

I reread this every year. I cry like a baby every year. Todd Beamer died a father, husband, and hero. Todd: Hello… Operator… listen to me. I can’t speak very loud. This is an emergency. I’m a passenger on a United flight to San Francisco. Our plane has been hijacked. Lisa: I understand. Can they see you? Todd: No. There are three that we know of. They have knives — razor knives, like box cutters. Someone announced from the cockpit there was a bomb. It sounded fake. Lisa: Your name?Todd: Todd Beamer. United Flight 93.Todd: They killed one passenger in first class. They forced most of us back. Fourteen of us here. Five flight attendants. The guy with the bomb ordered us to sit on the floor. Lisa: Are you okay? Todd: We’re going down… wait. No. We’re leveling off. We changed directions. We’re flying east again. Todd: A guy named Jeremy called his wife. She told him two planes hit the World Trade Center. Lisa, is that true? Lisa: I have to tell you the truth. It’s very bad. Both towers are gone. A third plane hit the Pentagon. Our country is under attack. I’m afraid your plane may be part of their plan. Todd: Oh God. Lisa, will you do something for me? Call my wife and my kids. Promise me you’ll call. Lisa: I promise. Todd: Our home number is… You have the same name as my wife. Lisa. We’ve been married ten years. She’s pregnant with our third child. Tell her I love her. I’ll always love her. We have two boys — David, he’s 3, and Andrew, he’s 1. Tell them their daddy loves them and he is so proud of them. The baby is due January 12th. I saw an ultrasound. We still don’t know if it’s a girl or a boy. Lisa: I’ll tell them. I promise, Todd.(Lisa patches in the FBI.) Agent: Todd, your plane is on a course for Washington. Best guess is the White House or the Capitol. Todd: I understand. I’ll be back. Todd: Everyone knows this isn’t a normal hijacking. We have decided we will not be pawns in their plot. Lisa: What are you going to do? Todd: Four of us are going to rush the one with the bomb. Then the cockpit. A stewardess is getting boiling water. We’ll take them out. Todd: Would you pray with me?They pray the Lord’s Prayer. Then: Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for thou art with me. Todd: God help me. Jesus help me.Are you guys ready? Let’s Roll.

🇺🇸 Divers off the Florida Keys just pulled a 22-pound silver bar worth around $100,000 from a wreck that sank more than 400 years ago. It came from the Nuestra Señora de Atocha, a Spanish galleon that went down in a 1622 hurricane hauling silver and gold from the mines of South America, taking 255 of its 260 crew with it. This is the first silver bar recovered from the site in nearly 30 years, and Mel Fisher's Treasures reckons there's still more than $120 million in silver, guns, and copper ingots down there. Four centuries later, the ocean is still handing back the loot one piece at a time. Source: SlashGear / Writer: Julie
