I cannot overstate how much I love this extraordinary score. With his characteristic fluidity and grace, Joe threads an almost impossible needle, capturing the tension, the wonder, the depth of emotion (and yes the weirdness!) of Brian’s movie. Give it a listen!!

I watched “Whalefall.” I had received a copy of Daniel Kraus’s novel, on which the film is based, quite some time ago, but hadn’t had the chance to read it yet. Kraus was also involved in writing the screenplay. It was a literary film that explored, in a somewhat metafictional way, the Steinbeck-like relationship between whales and humans as part of an ecosystem, alongside the familial bond between father and son. The visual effects were also outstanding. However, I don’t think I’ll be eating squid for a while 🦑. I love whales. They appear frequently in my games. When I was in the early years of elementary school, I researched whale ecology for a school project. Ever since then, I’ve been fascinated by their enormous size as mammals and their symbolic presence in the marine ecosystem. In MGS2, Raiden is swallowed, digested, and excreted by the enormous Arsenal Gear, a whale that swallows digital information. Whales also feature in MGSV and DEATH STRANDING. There are references to Herman Melville’s “Moby-Dick” as well. It’s a shame they didn’t make a program for the film 🐳.

With its mono-tints, theatricality, emotional ambition, lyricism and massive metaphor, #Whalefall reminded me at times of silent cinema - except that its sound design is very 21st C.
Not just about hard v soft masculinity.
Loved it.

Director Brian Duffield reveals they made a practical whale stomach for ‘WHALEFALL’ that would change shape after filming each day.
“Day 2 we can't resume shooting how we were shooting because now Austin can't fit in the same way & the camera is now in a different place.”

Happy WHALEFALL eve! Deepest gratitude to @BrianDuffield and his merry band of maniacs for making this one of the most profoundly joyous and meaningful experiences of my career. Original movies rule and the whale is forever!!

#Whalefall director Brian Duffield on prioritizing Austin Abrams' safety on set:
"He didn’t have a lot of physical control over what was happening to him. The stomach was on a gimbal that’s basically a bucking bronco. It launched him all over the place, and he wasn’t really in command of where he landed a lot of the time. He was just getting tossed around, and there’s no hitting your mark inside a 360-degree stomach. But our stomach sets were squishy, so there was a lot of good padding in there...
So we worked really hard to not kill Austin Abrams, and Zach [Cregger] would’ve also killed me if I killed Austin Abrams since 'Resident Evil' was shooting with him right after we wrapped. Keeping him safe and healthy was good for all of us." hollywoodreporter.com/movies…
Michael Packard, 62, is perhaps the only person in recorded history who can weigh in with any real authority on the new film "Whalefall," in which Austin Abrams plays a scuba diver trying to do what Packard did in 2021: escape from inside a whale. cnn.it/3UnAcmJ
