Outrage is growing after a White inmate in a South Carolina jail overseen by a Black administrator DIED OF THIRST on his cell floor... surrounded by FECES INCHES DEEP, with the water to his sink TURNED OFF. He was drinking from his OWN TOILET to survive. He wrote letters to his father begging for help, saying he was being tortured for being White. His name was Gary "Bubba" Blair. He was 43 years old. He was the caretaker for his elderly father. He had two nephews he loved dearly and a dog named Scrubby. Why was he in jail in the first place? In February, Bubba arrived at his sister's home wearing a sheriff's office golf shirt, a security badge, handcuffs, and pepper spray. Deputies arrested him for impersonating an officer. A judge ruled he was not mentally competent to stand trial and ORDERED the state to place him in treatment on June 3. The South Carolina Office of Mental Health never followed the order. Bubba remained in that jail for 181 days waiting for a bed. He died 51 days after a judge ordered him to get help. In April, he wrote to his father: "I've lost about 90 pounds so far. I'm starving to death in here; only two meals a day, that's it... you starve, and I also have to drink from my toilet and no mattress to sleep on, only a hard ground." "I've been abused by staff and assaulted by everyone on the unit; I had to go 28 days without a shower... no help for a white man" "The staff is very nasty to white inmates thanks to Troy Ellerbe and James Dixon." Then in May, Bubba did something haunting. He wrote a letter to a CIRCUIT COURT JUDGE pleading for help. The letter had the wrong address. It was returned. It never got there. Meanwhile, sources say the water to his sink had been SHUT OFF. His cell floor and walls were caked in feces INCHES DEEP. He was kept alone. Never let out. Other inmates, who were allowed a few hours out of their cells, told reporters they saw Bubba drinking toilet water. So they filled an empty potato chip bag with water and slid it through the food slot in his door!!!!! Most of it spilled before it could reach him. On July 24th, jailers found him dead on the floor. 49 days later, the autopsy was released. Cause of death: profound dehydration due to WATER DEPRIVATION. Manner of death: HOMICIDE. The report also found bedsores on his HEELS, consistent with lying on a concrete floor for days. Acute bronchial pneumonia. Severe weight loss. Physical evidence that he had been DRINKING TOILET WATER. He had lost so much weight and was in such terrible condition that his sister and aunt went to the funeral home and did not recognize his body. The sheriff fired the Black jail administrator 5 days after Bubba died, and won't say why. Bubba Blair sang for seniors in nursing homes. He looked after his dad. He deserved far better than dying of thirst on a concrete floor. Say his name. Gary "Bubba" Blair.

A young man begged prison officials not to lock him in a cell with the monster who abused his sister—and when the system ignored him, instant justice took over. In 2020, Washington state inmate Shane Goldsby arrived at the Airway Heights Corrections Center. To his absolute horror, prison staff assigned him to share a cell with 70-year-old Robert Munger—a convicted child predator serving a 43-year sentence for abusing Goldsby's own sister. Goldsby repeatedly begged prison staff for a cell reassignment, warning guards about the extreme conflict of interest and the impossibility of sharing a small space with the man who destroyed his family. Corrections staff ignored his warnings, forcing them into the same small cell. When Munger reportedly began talking about Goldsby's sister inside the cell, the pressure exploded. Goldsby attacked the predator, delivering a fatal beating. Goldsby pled guilty to murder and received nearly 25 additional years in prison. In court, Goldsby expressed remorse to Munger's family, but pointed out the catastrophic failure of prison administrators: "I kept asking to be moved. I knew what would happen... The system set this up."
