Adrian moved on to the next patient.
That was what people liked about working with him. He didn't panic easily. He noticed small things, and when something didn't look right, he followed it up.
Around midnight, a nurse left a sandwich beside his computer.

βI will.β
βYou said that two hours ago.β
Adrian glanced at the sandwich.
βI'll get to it.β
She shook her head and walked away.
He didn't touch it.
At 3:17 in the morning, Dr. Adrian Cole woke up in the doctorsβ lounge and realized he had fallen asleep at work.
For a few seconds, he just stared at the ceiling.He didn't remember sitting down.
His glasses were still on. His phone was beside him, showing six missed calls.

Adrian sat up and rubbed his face.
He was an emergency physician, so long shifts weren't unusual for him. Neither were crowded waiting rooms, ambulance arrivals, or those nights when you kept telling yourself you'd leave after the next patient.
