Putting it out there: 9 new senators, 50+ new House members, and ~20 presidential campaigns will all be staffing up over the next year. If you're young and want to work in Democratic politics, there won't be a much better time to jump in.

AOC: A note for Gen Z. If you want to understand millennial cringe, what you all call millennial cringe, this earnestness, imagine all the seats we flipped last night. That feeling, plus, on top of it, electing the first Black president ever. And on top of that, you did it the first time you ever voted. That hits generationally. You’ve been chasing that feeling ever since. And because you did it the first time you ever voted, you’re like, ‘Yeah, we can change the world. Why not? We did it the first time. Let’s just do it again.’

Congressman-elect @Scott_Wiener is the reason I got into local politics. In early 2021, I had decided to leave the private sector to help small businesses in the middle of the pandemic. I was trying to raise money to support them, and on a limb I emailed Scott's office for advice. Within 24 hours, Scott himself replied and shared legislation he was working on which could have cleared rent debt for thousands of small businesses. That lit a spark in me. One person could write one law that affected thousands of individuals. And took me down the path years later to run for office and serve my city as an elected official as well. As Scott moves on to Congress, I reflect on all our conversations in the last five years, and how they mirror the very first one. He always responds within 24 hours. He is always honest, empathetic, and supportive. He is one of the few individuals you can dive into technocratic details, and direct them towards progressive causes. From housing to transit to civil rights, he has led vocally and gotten results. As I went through all of our photos together, it's auspicious that nearly every photo together we have a shovel or hammer in hand. So many groundbreakings for housing, parks, and historic establishments in San Francisco were the result of a law Scott wrote. YIMBYism simply would not exist without Scott. And we all have big shoes left to fill in San Francisco. Because Scott has permanently changed the fabric of our city - literally and figuratively. And I know he will now permanently change the fabric of our country in a moment that our nation needs so deeply right now. Because so many people express admiration for Scott's legislative prowess, his resilience, and his intelligence. But what gets lost is humanity and empathy. Even when we disagree, Scott never takes it personally. He will seek to collaborate on where he can find consensus, but always make clear where he stands. And even those who oppose him, I have seen him extend a hand out in support when they need him, time and time again. I am excited to call Scott our next Congressman, and we are truly lucky to have him representing San Francisco for decades to come.

Thank you, San Francisco. I’m deeply grateful for the trust voters have placed in me, and I’m ready to get to work for you.
I want to thank Supervisor Connie Chan for a spirited and hard-fought campaign. We’ve had our disagreements, but we share a deep love for San Francisco and for our country. And thank you to our incredible campaign team, to every volunteer who walked precincts or made calls, to everyone who donated, hosted a house party, or put up a window sign, and to the labor unions, the environmental, housing, LGBTQ, and progressive organizations, the Democratic Party, and the elected officials who stood with us every step of the way. You turned this campaign into a movement.
I’m humbled to carry forward the powerful legacy of this seat — Phil Burton, Sala Burton, and the greatest Speaker in modern American history, Nancy Pelosi. Speaker Pelosi came to Congress to fight AIDS when too many wanted to look away, and she never stopped fighting for our city and our country. Madame Speaker, thank you.
This victory is also historic. For the first time ever, San Francisco will be represented in Congress by an LGBTQ person — indeed, no LGBTQ member of the House has ever represented any part of Northern California. When I stepped off the escalator at Castro Muni Station in 1997 and fell head over heels for this city, I could never have imagined this honor.

San Franciscans voted for results, and we have so much work ahead: Building the millions of homes we need; moving toward true universal health care; investing in clean energy, public transit, and high-speed rail; standing up for science, education, and immigrants; making sure people — not massive corporations — decide what works for this country, including on AI; and ensuring the rule of law applies to everyone, including the President.
It won’t be easy. But on Election Day, voters across the country delivered a powerful mandate for Democrats in Congress. I’m deeply inspired by the trust they placed in us to take big swings to lower the cost of living, stop the endless wars, hold Trump and his cronies accountable for their corruption, and rein in the threat of artificial intelligence. In Washington I’ll bring the same determination I showed in Sacramento every single day.

It’s time to deliver a better tomorrow for our city and our country.
NEW: San Francisco Supervisor Connie Chan concedes the race for Nancy Pelosi's House seat (#CA11) to state Sen. Scott Wiener. Both are Democrats — Chan positioned herself to Wiener's left.

Tonight, the American people sent a clear message — they want a politics that brings people together rather than divides them, and leaders who offer concrete solutions to the challenges they face. These results were only possible because outstanding candidates stepped forward in every region of the country — including in areas once considered long shots. They came from different backgrounds and represented a range of political perspectives, but were united by shared values, a belief in public service, and a commitment to putting the people of their districts and states first. We also owe a debt of gratitude to the thousands of election officials and volunteers from both parties who helped ensure a smooth election and carried out one of the most essential functions of our democracy. While this administration has another two years in office, our job now is to roll up our sleeves, make changes wherever we have the power to do so, prevent further damage, and lay the groundwork for the future.
