Their history is foundational to Los Angeles, but it is also marked by colonization, the seizure of their lands, violence, and generations of people fighting to preserve their cultures and traditions. On Indigenous Peoples’ Day, we honor the Kizh, Tongva, Tataviam, and Chumash Peoples and those who are connected to the ancestral lands, who have cared for these lands for generations and continue their stewardship today. We also recognize the Tribal communities who continue to shape our city and carry forward their cultures, traditions, and histories. Honoring Indigenous peoples means telling the truth about our past, listening to their voices, and working toward a future rooted in respect, healing, and reconciliation.

The death penalty is inadmissible because it is an attack on the inviolability and dignity of the person.
