So they're gaming out scenarios for how they should respond to the political upheaval after an "inevitable catastrophic AI event," but not for how to prevent those catastrophic AI events to begin with?
Scoop: Top execs at Anthropic, OpenAI and other AI companies are privately gaming out scenarios for "the day after" an inevitable catastrophic AI event in the next 6-12 months. They assume Democrats in power will try -- and fail -- to shut down AI through bans, pauses or kill switches. axios.com/2026/10/09/ai-comp…

Today, The Cook Political Report is moving 18 House races, all in Democrats' direction. With these new moves, we’re also adjusting our range: the most likely outcome is now that Democrats will pick up nine to 19 seats. Read more from @ercovey: cookpolitical.com/analysis/h…

News: Sens. Daines (R) and Merkley (D) have a BIPARTISAN rules change proposal to make the Senate function better - Get rid of archaic delays like the "intervening day" - Suspension votes at 2/3 margin for popular bills - Fast track to floor for bipartisan bills from committee and for bipartisan Appropriations bills They need 2/3 of the Senate to support it and they want to do it this year. They've talked to Schumer, Thune and the White House Daines: “More bills passed, more votes taken, less time wasted" Merkley: “If we don’t solve this, eventually one team or the other is going to get rid of the filibuster" semafor.com/article/10/07/20…

Nearly all of the U.S. senators elected this year will be in office when Congress debates how to restructure Social Security to prevent an automatic drop-off in retirement benefits in 2032. But very few have detailed what changes they'd support. newsfromthestates.com/articl…

The financial pain is real: Wage growth fell to 3% (y/y) in September. That's the lowest in 5 years. Wage growth: 3% Inflation: ~3.4% Inflation has eaten up all wage gains for the average worker since April. Many people are having to make hard choices about what to buy and what to skimp on right now. Yes, consumption is still strong (mainly due to wealthier Americans and people dipping into savings or credit cards), but a lot of people have to think hard about every dollar they spend. Notable: Wages only ticked up 0.1% in the month of September. That was the weakest monthly gain since December 2025.

The Senate voted to confirm Keith Sonderling as Labor secretary, marking one of the few Trump admin picks to get through the upper chamber recently after a ND senator put a hold on “any and all” nominees. My latest for @statesnewsroom: newsfromthestates.com/articl…
