What do you do as a teacher in an era when students don't read outside of class & often struggle to read even in-class?? You can do as the @ncte suggests & "de-center" the text, abandoning reading books altogether & replacing them with short form videos & other dross. Or you can do as Jaime Johnson does & "re-center" the text, reading a worthy book together as a class. When you do that you can curate the act of reading itself so it becomes a meaningful, rich, empathetic habit for students. teachlikeachampion.org/blog/…

Infancy has its share of frustrations. Just ask this little one. Check out his reaction to his rattle as he and Dad join forces to make it come alive with sound - his eyes WIDE OPEN with amazement. 👀 When it stops, we can clearly read his thoughts: Let’s do that again! But watch what happens when our hero tries to replicate the sound without Dad’s assistance. He’s ready with the eyes and posture… but can’t make the rattle do its trick. That’s because, in the first example, Dad contributed a motor skill far beyond this little one’s independent abilities: a precise, high speed vibration of the arm. Watching our hero’s valiant effort to replicate the experience, only to fall short offers a game changing reminder for parents of young children. That reminder: childhood is a time during which your baby’s growing ambitions often find themselves at odds with their current abilities… and that can lead to frustration. The more sensitive and observant you are, the better you can support your baby’s goal-oriented activities. But that’s not all. The more closely you watch, the more attuned to your baby’s desires and frustrations you will become. And the more your outlook on their behaviors will be transformed. Know this: Babies aren’t “fussy.” Or “bad.” But they are easily frustrated when their needs and desires are out of step with their abilities to address them. Whether it’s a desire for comfort and attachment, or food, or something as simple as making a toy rattle make that cool sound… infants aren’t as mysterious as they sometimes seem. Your powers of observation go a long way toward interpreting your little one’s behaviors and keeping frustration at bay. This sweet little guy and his rattle were shared to IG by baby_fever00.

Before any Direct Instruction lesson sequences are authored, the curriculum must be analyzed. What goes in this curriculum is opinionated - what are the most powerful ideas - and structured around relationships between concepts. Direct Instruction is not just “clear” teaching.

Many dog owners have long believed that their pets can sense when a stranger is not to be trusted, and research from Kyoto University now offers experimental support for the idea that dogs rapidly recognize unreliable people and then decline to take their cues, a finding that suggests the subtle way a dog sometimes pulls away from an unfamiliar person may reflect a real capacity to judge how dependable humans are. In the behavioral trials, the researchers examined whether dogs would keep following a human pointing gesture after they had been misled by it, and when an experimenter repeatedly pointed toward containers that held no food, the dogs soon learned that the signal could not be relied upon and became increasingly unwilling to follow it in later attempts. This refusal to cooperate with a deceptive person indicates that the social intelligence of dogs is more refined than has often been assumed, since the animals do not simply obey human gestures out of habit but instead appear to assess how trustworthy a person has been in earlier encounters and to adjust their behavior in response. According to the account you provided, the dogs were also willing to follow the instructions of a new and neutral experimenter, which would show that they do not lose confidence in people as a whole and instead mark and remember the specific individuals who have broken their trust. [Takaoka, A., Maeda, T., Hori, Y., & Fujita, K. (2015). Do dogs follow behavioral cues from an unreliable human? *Animal Cognition*, 18(2), 475-483. DOI: 10.1007/s10071-014-0816-6]

Direct Instruction has a documented design approach called Theory of Instruction, a 50 year meta-analysis of its effects, and was the winner of Project Follow Through. At one time, an entire journal was dedicated to its tenets. Educationalists: "The definition is unclear!"
