Actress Asavela Mqokiyana To Appear In Court After Being Arrested For Driving At 198km/h As MEC Duma Warns Motorists Of Festive Season Crackdown Actress and model Asavela Mqokiyana is expected to reappear at the Scottburgh Magistrates Court on Wednesday, 28 October 2026, following her arrest for speeding in KwaZulu-Natal. MEC for Transport and Human Settlements Siboniso Duma said the arrest serves as a reminder that the #NenzaniLaEzweni Operation remains in full swing. According to Duma, Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) officers from Park Rynie arrested Mqokiyana along the N2 at Ellingham after she was allegedly caught driving a BMW X3 SUV at 198km/h in a 120km/h zone. She appeared in court on 19 October, with her next appearance scheduled for Wednesday. Between 15 and 21 October 2026, RTI and Operation Shanela teams recorded 421 speeding charges and stopped 12,073 vehicles. A further 1,719 motorists were charged, including 87 for driving without licences and 141 for not wearing seatbelts. Authorities also identified 112 unlicensed vehicles and impounded 140 vehicles for operating without permits. Duma said authorities would intensify enforcement during the festive season. Between 22 and 28 October, more than 26 #NenzaniLaEzweni multidisciplinary operations were planned, alongside 15 additional operations targeting drunk driving. The MEC warned that RTI would have no mercy on motorists who break traffic laws, saying the enforcement approach had already been demonstrated during Transport Month.
