Tesla now runs half of America’s public DC fast chargers with over 40,000 ports, while the $7.5B federal NEVI program had opened just 384 by April 2025.
One company built the backbone of the national network with its own capital while the government spent billions and produced a rounding error.
Private industry is still outpacing the mandate, and that gap isn’t narrowing anytime soon.
