“Bessent does not necessarily need to force yields lower directly…more plausible strategy is to reduce duration supply, improve dealer financing, strengthen institutional demand & tolerate restrictive dollar conditions while waiting for weaker growth to create the bond rally.”
How Bessent Could Try To Push Treasury Yields Lower The Treasury market is becoming the central pressure point of the cycle. With the 10 year above 5% and bond volatility elevated, the issue is whether policymakers can keep Treasury financing orderly while inflation, massive borrowing needs and weakening private activity pull in opposite directions. The Real Constraint The problem is increasingly the price investors demand to hold long duration. High real yields, heavy issuance, fiscal uncertainty and elevated term premium are all contributing. The persistent diesel and refined product shock makes this harder because higher rates cannot create refinery capacity or restore disrupted shipping routes. The Fed can suppress demand, but it risks damaging housing, credit and employment before fixing the inflation source. What Treasury Can Do Bessent can reduce the duration private markets must absorb through • More Treasury bill issuance • Expanded buybacks of longer dated securities • TGA cash management and possible repo support • Adjustments to auction sizes and reopenings Bill heavy financing reduces duration supply today but shifts refinancing risk back toward the government. Regulators can also improve the ability of banks and dealers to hold Treasuries through leverage relief, collateral treatment and central clearing. The Dollar Shortage Path Another route could create a powerful Treasury bid even at the expense of the broader economy. The Fed and Treasury would not need to openly engineer a dollar shortage. They could simply maintain conditions that increasingly produce one. The Fed keeps short rates restrictive and avoids aggressively expanding dollar liquidity while Treasury continues heavy bill issuance and periodically rebuilds its cash balance. Then an external shock accelerates the process • European banking or sovereign stress • A Japanese carry trade unwind • Emerging market currency pressure • A global credit event • Geopolitical escalation As dollar liabilities become harder to fund, investors reduce leverage, sell risk assets and seek liquidity. If the shock damages growth faster than it raises inflation expectations, Treasury demand can eventually surge and pull long yields lower. But the sequence matters. A dollar shortage can initially cause Treasury selling as foreign central banks, funds and corporations liquidate their most liquid assets for dollars. The larger Treasury rally usually comes later. First comes dollar scarcity, deleveraging and volatility. Then policymakers provide repo liquidity, swap lines or collateral support without necessarily cutting rates aggressively. Once forced selling is contained, weakening growth can create the safe haven bid into Treasuries. If The Market Breaks If auctions repeatedly weaken, dealer capacity tightens and market functioning deteriorates, policymakers gain more justification for • Expanded repo support • Regulatory relief • Targeted Treasury purchases • Operation Twist style maturity transformation Explicit yield curve control would remain a last resort because defending a ceiling during persistent inflation could require enormous intervention. The Most Likely Strategy Bessent does not necessarily need to force yields lower directly. The more plausible strategy is to reduce duration supply, improve dealer financing, strengthen institutional demand and tolerate restrictive dollar conditions while waiting for weaker domestic and global growth to create the bond rally. The danger is that Treasury yields may eventually fall because the economy and financial system deteriorate badly enough to create their own demand for safety. That is the late cycle tradeoff Preserve the Treasury market by allowing financial conditions to become restrictive enough that the economy eventually creates its own Treasury bid.

Don't change the outcome believe in tested means
Cut it on all homes, or don't cut it, but please stop distorting the market. It would be the government saying 'we'll pay your stamp duty, but only on a new home, because it helps the builders AND keeps prices propped up'. The opposite of improving affordability for all.

No way on earth is inflation anywhere near 3%, at the supermarkets many items are up 50% in 2 year and still rising, we know Energy and Fuel are through the roof, so what is coming down to to get it 3% overall?

Realistic odds are part and parcel of the tenure
30 year interest rates are Switzerland 0.6%,China 2.1%, Germany 3.8%,Japan 4.2%, Spain 4.6%, Italy 5.2%,France 5.5%,US 5.6%, UK 6%. The UK has the highest rates because it is over borrowing and has ultra high energy taxes and prices.

While on dispersion, have a look at this September chart of returns on 10-year government bonds: US Treasuries were down twice as much as German Bunds (-3.7% versus -1.9%), reversing the prior US relative outperformance. #economy #markets #bonds #yields

Where's the data from?
Dividend stocks are getting killed, and the bond market is why. Utilities (XLU) yield 2.99%. The 10-year Treasury pays 5.2%, the highest since 2007. Nobody holds a utility for 3% when the risk-free bond pays more with zero price risk, so the stock gets repriced lower. Utilities down 8% in 3 weeks. Staples and industrials broke the same trendline. Same discount-rate math as 2022. It does not reverse until the 10-year rolls over.

BREAKING NEWS: I am pleased to announce that the United States of America has entered into an Agreement with The Kingdom of Denmark, and Greenland, that gives the United States permanent control over security, and all other needs, in Greenland, completely addressing ALL of our many U.S. concerns. There will be NO COST to the United States! At my direction, we worked with representatives of Denmark and Greenland to guarantee that the United States will FOREVER have the complete ability to do what is necessary in Greenland in order to secure and defend the security of Greenland, and the United States of America. Additionally, from now on, no U.S. adversary can EVER have a base in Greenland, have a military presence in Greenland, or make sensitive investments in Greenland, without our express written approval. For over 100 years, Presidents have known the strategic importance of Greenland, but NONE of them were able to do anything about it. I am proud to be the President that permanently and conclusively addressed this very important situation. This is an “Infinite Life” Agreement, there is no end! We are very honored and proud of what has just taken place, and everything agreed to today will be cherished by the American People. We will immediately begin the process of developing a large Military presence in the appropriate part of Greenland, of which there are many. We will work with the people of Greenland in its development and construction. This solution is a great one for the United States of America, Denmark, Greenland, and all of our Allies. We look forward to working with the wonderful people of Denmark and Greenland toward a magnificent future with respect to this large, and highly strategic, parcel of land. We will be very protective of it! This is a dream come true for the United States of America, one that is very important, historic, and special. Thank you for your attention to this matter! President DONALD J. TRUMP

Stagnated consequence
The pound has lost ~40% of its purchasing power since 2020 (partly due to Covid money printing), so the number of UK millionaires “should” have increased to reflect the debasement and the increased money in circulation. But the number of millionaires has actually declined by ~60% since 2021. The wealth destruction taking place in this country is staggering. The US is growing its number of millionaires at 1,200 per day meanwhile and over 1.6 million since 2020.

God bless those tycoons
We have been partners for almost a century. Aramco started in 1933 when Saudi Arabia granted oil exploration rights to the Standard Oil Company of California (now $CVX), leading to the creation of the California Arabian Standard Oil Company. SOCAL was later joined by the Texas Oil Company (Texaco, now a subsidery of $CVX), the Standard Oil Company of New Jersey (now $XOM), and Socony-Vacuum Oil Company (now also $XOM).

A Meeting of Giants: A Rare Shot from the Voyager Archives 🛰 In this historic image, the moons Europa and Io are captured against the backdrop of Jupiter’s Great Red Spot. The scale is impressive: the giant storm—which has been raging on the gas giant for centuries—could easily swallow the entire Earth, while the passing moons vividly illustrate the colossal size of the Solar System's largest planet.
