When I was writing Unreal Engine 1, my time was divided as follows:
- Around 30% went to seriously deep coding on hard problems: assembly language texture mappers, C++ BSP trees, data persistence, object oriented systems design, and networking.
- Around 70% was just typing and refactoring large bodies of code needed for a complete engine feature set. This was not hard, and while I was doing it my mind was mostly on the deeper coding topics, thinking and planning for what's next. It didn't feel much different from vibe coding today, except that it was just me typing code on an IBM Model M keyboard rather than prompting it and reviewing the results.
So, it has always seemed perfectly logical that we would rely on AI for that 70%, once the AI could do it with a similar quality standard as we could, which has never been perfection. It came as no surprise that, after a few years of AI model evolution, it was able to take the reigns on that 70% and free up programmers' time for more valuable tasks.
What's more of a surprise is the emergence of AI as a sort of insta-Carmack able to solve hard technical problems quite cleverly and often cleanly, and that it's able to reason about and work in complex 3D scenes both by operating the tools and by directly understanding the raw data files.
I abandoned assembly language in 1998 when out-of-order CPUs made much simpler C/C++ code faster, and never I missed it. If prompting through architectural documents, concept art, and design plans can transcend typing code and tweaking vertices, that will enable developers to spend their time on higher-level, higher value technical and creative tasks.
What matters is the end product, whether it's a game or an engine. Anything developers can do to try out more ideas and make better software and games faster is a win for everyone.
Eurocels down bad
JUST IN: Elon Musk says the new Tesla $TSLA Roadster "will be sentient."
"You will be able to ask the Roadster to perform any of the tricks shown autonomously."
Eurocommie

I hate to be the one to burst the Tesla bubble today, but the spectacular “flight” we witnessed at the Roadster reveal needs a little context. The car is carrying around 250kg of compressed air, plus the weight of the tanks, valves and thrusters needed to contain and release it.
Based on the published figures, that gives it roughly 1.5–2 seconds of maximum thrust before the system needs to be refilled.
In short, it's a gimmick.

Socialism is corruption. A country where the state is 50 to 60% of the economy is corrupt and evil.
Put all those Scandinavian countries at the bottom

They want another 35 years of zero growth
Japan just introduced new laws that will make it much harder for foreigners to live there.
Foreigners must now make more than the average income in Japan, understand Japanese well, and pay an entry fee that was just raised by 20 times in order to gain residency.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
The post conflates changes to permanent residency rules with general residency or work visas. Fee hikes and new requirements for income above the Japanese average and Japanese proficiency apply only to permanent residency permit applications.

Deport this commie to North Korea
Total Wealth of Bottom 50% of U.S. households
1989: $317.8 billion
2026: $313 billion
Total Wealth of Top 0.00001% (20 households)
1989: $88.6 billion
2026: $4 trillion
This is insane!
We need a wealth tax on billionaires NOW!
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
The claimed totals for bottom 50% U.S. household wealth ($317.8B in 1989, $313B in 2026) are incorrect; Federal Reserve data show ~$720B then and ~$4.28T in Q2 2026.
