I spent most of 2024 writing an MG book.
A friend suggested entering it in the inaugural 'Faber Action! prize'.
I didn't win...
but I'm pretty happy with 2nd place. 🤯 faber.co.uk/journal/faber-la…
…Hopefully you'll see The Knight Thief on shelves in 2027!
Met @Joelarcanjo at the @bathkidslitfest today. Crookhaven was a real influence when I was starting to write The Knight Thief, so it was great to meet him in person. Looking forward to getting stuck into his new book, Beast Mode, too.
Delighted to see the fantastic 'Where is Pierre?' by @emmaclarkeillu1 in the bookshop at the @britishlibrary - will be a lovely gift for my son!
Just a heads up: the tv adaptation of @Joelarcanjo's Crookhaven starts on Sunday on BBC. The books are superb (& I believe parts were filmed in Northern Ireland) so it'll be well worth your time - I can't wait to watch it with my daughter! #BBC #Crookhaven #TV #WritingCommunity
Can't wait to get the incredibly talented @emmaclarkeillu1's debut picturebook! There's 25% off pre-orders until Friday!
WHERE IS PIERRE? He’s at @WaterstonesKids AND with a cheeky wee money saving pre-order offer! Click on the link to buy your copy now.

Love advice like this!
I'm not an expert, but having done line edits on some manuscripts recently, here are some things we're all guilty of and you might want to consider when editing.

Such an amazing collection of poems about bereavement. @dreambeastpoems - well done and thank you.
For Amani and Zayn. ❤️

A few weeks ago, our school lost a beautiful family in the Air India flight. I needed to create a legacy for them. After a call out to poetry friends, I was overwhelmed by the response. This anthology is for Zayn, Amani, Mum & Dad. It is the most important thing I've done as a poet. I hope I got it right. Please share 💜
Spent a bit of time last night and this morning trying to refine the overarching narrative of several books in a series. What software do people use & recommend for this?!

Writing a book is 10% typing and 90% lying awake at night thinking about that one scene that just won’t cooperate. #writingcommunity #amwriting #amquerying

This is the single easiest way to become a better storyteller?
Consume all the stories you can.
Read books, articles, and short stories. Watch TV shows, films, and plays. Listen to narrative podcasts and audiobooks.
Here's why 🧵
MG writing journey so far:
Step 1: Write a book
Step 2: Accidentally come 2nd in the Faber Action! Prize
Step 3: Somehow get repped by the brilliant @HellieOgden at WME
Step 4: try to act cool about Steps 1-3
now for Step 5: Surviving parenthood whilst editing!

My kids wanted to put on a 'show' this afternoon. Usually this involves 20 minutes of 'rehersals' before playing music, singing & dancing. I should have realised the 'rehersals' were too quiet.
The show was an indoor slip'n'slide, with soap & water on the floor.
Its towel time
Me: “We’ve got loads of time before football training, let’s pop into the café beside the pitch.”
My kids: “Cool, we’ll eat these sausages atom by atom.”
So now we've missed the class and my kids literally stopped eating the second it was too late to go.
Wonderful.

Last night, we announced the winners of the Action! Prize on the Faber stand at Bologna. Congratulations to Theo Malings, who landed first place for her sensational YA sci-fi fantasy thriller, The Red Twilight 🏆

So, you've finished a manuscript and you're keen to make sure it's polished before you proceed to the next step on your writing journey. What to do next? Here are 6 suggested steps for self-editing your first draft (as usual, by @keslupo):
At the beginning of 2024, I set myself the challenge of trying to write a longer form story. 365 days and 102475 words later (almost double my targeted word count)...

🧵 As someone from Northern Ireland, a place with a history of deep division, I’ve been watching the online reaction to the U.S. election results with concern. The despair, the stories of broken families and friendships, the 4B movement - it’s heartbreaking. (1/8)
I've lived in a society split along deep lines. It can consume your entire identity, and not in a good way. It took decades of hard work, pain and dialogue to start healing. It’s not easy, but it’s possible. And, like most things that require hard work, it’s worth it. (7/8)
