Jay B has shared he never strived for a leadership role, he now appreciates what it taught him. “Actually, I didn’t want to be leader,” he recalls. “But JYP recommended me for [it]. They just pushed me to become leader. That time did make me more grown up. I got responsibility. So, I think about when we left JYP; I had even more responsibility.” That shaped how he handled GOT7’s 2021 exit from JYP Entertainment. He says he wanted only what felt fair for the work the group had built alongside the company. “I thought the name and our songs are what we made with JYP,” he explains. “I thought about what we are, our albums, all the things that are ours — that’s why I had to keep them safe. But that was the limit; I didn’t have to go for more and be greedy about things, I just did what makes sense.” #JayB #제이비 #GOT7

About the creation of 528Hz “I started with a goal of working with good people and enjoying the process together,” he explains. “I believe that when people genuinely enjoy working together, they create a better synergy from it, so I place a lot of importance on having strong chemistry with the people I work with. Also, my role within the label is mainly focused on the creative side. While I’m responsible for making decisions, I also respect the value and opinions of my team members and make sure to move forward with a collaborative mind.” The label’s identity came largely from Jay B himself. 528 Hz is often called a “healing frequency” and that’s part of the name’s appeal. But Jay B’s thinking goes further: “It was part of something where those negative emotions like those that are sad or bad, are also positive things. That’s what I thought because if you don’t have sadness and those kinds of negative emotions there then I don’t think the positive emotion exists. So, I wanted to reflect those kinds of emotions through the sound. But also before I go to sleep, I listen to sound meditations a lot, so it kind of clicked from there too. Guided meditation makes me think too much, so I stick to white noise. When I hear 528 hertz, I focus on only my body and inner self.” #JayB #제이비

Jay B doesn’t like to oversell himself. Asked about new music, he hints something is on the way as soon as late October. “Not a big thing,” he adds. “Just something.” Instead, he hopes fans do take the message of his releases to heart. “I really want my fans to listen to my TR. EE album and hope the fans really enjoy it,” Jay B says. “Honestly, I don’t want to talk about promoting myself too much, but I do want to honestly say to my fans that I hope they’re healthy physically and mentally. Through my TR. EE album, and also the songs that are gonna come out in the future, I want fans to listen and get those ‘layback’ feelings for themselves and for their lives.” #JayB #제이비

But the new 2018.12.25 album is Def. the artist, not just the writer or producer — two identities that are important for Jay B to distinguish. As the title suggests, the album has been long in the making. It began in 2018 as an experiment rather than a plan. “It was more like, ‘Oh, let’s try something, you know, let’s try this project,’” he shares. “I was just making the tracks slowly and I finally chose the songs for that album.” While Jay B doesn’t think a Def.-specific tour is in the immediate future, he does have a dream version in mind. “I want to try to make just one show in Korea with my band,” he shares, envisioning it “like a session.” #JayB #제이비

After working at companies of every size, Jay B is candid about what a larger record label and management agency both gave him and kept from him — and when he knew it was time to run. “While I was in a bigger company, of course there is safety and more care services they provide, which was a very big advantage,” he shares,“I felt more secure in that sense, but the problem was that people were carrying me too much. Having that safety is a really big positive, but at the same time having so much comfort taught me to care less about the little things. So, I felt there were a lot of things that I didn’t know about while I was there. There were experiences where I was physically hurt and those were moments where I realized that I need to learn more about the world. Now, after establishing a label, I have also gained a big portion of responsibility. I have a lot of good teammates that I need to care for as well. So, now I’m thinking about creating and providing great moments for the teammates as well.” #JayB #제이비
