Of course no one is arguing that energy affordability is not a worthy goal. But in a world where data centers and the Iran war are the main drivers of skyrocketing energy costs, the idea that NEPA and the ESA also need to be severely weakened to solve the problem is very dubious. Indeed it feels like fossil fuel groups etc are opportunistically using this moment to destroy laws they’ve long hated, with BAAJA as their vehicle for doing so. That’s one of the main issues that green groups have with the bill imo.
Good messaging here. A lot of the debate over BAAJA has been on climate because the bulk of the dissent has come from green groups.
And while this is still a net good for decarbonization, I think it's important to take a step back here and realize we live in a democracy and the #1 issue is affordability. If you want to lower costs for concerned voters, you pass BAAJA. Very straightforward argument.

BREAKING: A reporter asked Mike Johnson today, “Should we bother asking you a question about Jared Kushner treasonously manipulating US foreign policy behind Marco Rubio’s back with billions in laundered bribes sitting in secret bank accounts, or have you not heard about it yet?"

🏗️Indiana regulators have issued a draft permit allowing Amazon to expand its fleet of backup diesel generators by more than 400 at its New Carlisle data center campus.
Comments are due November 18.

First, every time Trump insults a reporter for asking a legitimate question, every follow up from another Reporter should be the same question until he answers it. Leaving your colleagues out to dry is simply wrong. 1

Every fraction of a degree of global warming matters.
Yet greenhouse gas emissions remain at record levels.
The new @UNEP #EmissionsGap Report shows what it will take to change course & pull back from the brink of a climate catastrophe.

We'll soon find out how gullible some people are. I predicted this move weeks ago - a hint of a partial hostage release in Trump's crazy war on clean energy involving the DOD's national security hold on a few onshore wind projects. Dig deeper. These holds were always frivolous. Nothing prevents Trump from finding other ways, later, to block or delay these projects. And there's nothing to end the obstruction/delay of hundreds of other clean energy projects, including the active attacks on offshore wind as recently as this week. A serious permitting deal must start with an end to the war on clean energy, and this cheap window dressing doesn't even come close to cutting it.

More than 800 former EPA staff have come out against BAAJA.
They are worried that, as written, the bill could "significantly limit EPA’s ability to issue regulations necessary to protect the public from air pollution."

A reminder of how quickly global CO2 emissions would need to decline to keep global warming within the 1.5°C Paris limit.
This looks… ambitious
According to the #IPCC AR6 Synthesis Report, to limit global warming to '1.5°C with no or limited overshoot', then global CO2 emissions decline:
* 48% in 6 years
* 80% in 14 years
* 99% in 24 years
(thanks @_david_ho_ for reminding me to remind people)

"The 1.5-degree limit is only possible if we ultimately stop burning all fossil fuels.
Not reduce.
Not abate.
Phaseout."

As Congress debates a bill that would make it easier to develop more oil and gas, the UN admits keeping global heating to 1.5 degrees - the goal of the Paris Agreement - is gone. What are we even doing?
The chance to keep global warming below 1.5°C with no overshoot is gone.
But urgent action can still limit the overshoot and bring warming back to 1.5°C by 2100.
Current policies, however, put the 🌎 on course for up to 2.8°C this century.

The revision of the Clean Water Act is what I think Big Tech wants the most from BAAJA, because it would let data centers be built even if opponents could show that the centers' energy provisioning and operation would poison local waters.
