I keep coming back to the "Teenagers will humble you every time :)" bc it's so flippant of the disillusionment and loss of trust her daughter must be feeling. As a kid with immigrant parents who didn't graduate high school, was low income, and who struggled with English, I realized early on they couldn't help with schoolwork or pay for tutoring, so my education was on me. My mom knew enough to figure out better schools (yes, they were PWI) for me and my siblings bc the ones we were zoned for weren't good. But aside from moving us into better schools (which is a huge thing!!) I had to figure everything out on my own: classes, grades, extracurriculars, testing, college (where to go, how to apply), FAFSA, scholarships, etc. and it was SO hard. I got into Berkeley and that changed *everything* for me but there are so many mistakes I recognized *after* that I know made it so I didn't get into an Ivy (how to interview for example lol). But if I had two college graduates and one who's livelihood was writing about education who knowingly put me in a subpar school, I would have expected them to do more! Pay attention to my grades and homework, really listen to my ongoing complaints about not feeling like I'm doing any work, not believe that a certificate is enough to prove I'm a good student when I don't pass standardized tests or worst of all, go years in between checking that the school is adequate when you know it's not. How is the daughter ever supposed to trust her?
