Two years ago, Hurricane Helene sent a 5–6 foot storm surge over Treasure Island, destroying nearly everything in its path. It was the kind of devastation that changes a place, and the people who lived through it, forever. It’s a time I will never forget. As the Public Information Officer for the city, police, and fire departments, I saw firsthand just how quickly Mother Nature can change everything. One moment, life is normal. The next, you’re navigating an island through uncertainty, destruction, and heartbreak. But in the middle of all that darkness, there were moments I’ll always carry with me. I watched our first responders work tirelessly, putting others before themselves. I watched coworkers show up and keep working, even while their own homes had been damaged or destroyed. I saw neighbors helping neighbors, strangers becoming friends, and a community coming together when it mattered most. Two years later, recovery is still happening. The scars are still visible. And for many, the memories are still very real. This biggest thing I learned above all, be thankful. Because everything can change in the blink of an eye.
