The Illusion of Loyalty: A Wake-Up Call for Artists and writers . In the corporate world, loyalty is often a one-sided illusion. Most companies operate not as communities, but as profit-driven machines—greedy engines fueled by productivity and performance metrics. They smile to your face, speak of “team spirit” and “family,” but behind closed doors, they treat you like a replaceable part. The moment your output dips, or your cost rises, the warmth vanishes. Concern becomes calculation. You’re no longer a person—they see you as a liability. This isn’t bitterness...It’s clarity and will help you going forward. After decades of dedication—20-30 years of showing up, delivering, sacrificing and so on, it becomes painfully clear: age doesn’t determine your worth in their eyes though it does play a part for some. Value is measured in dollars, not wisdom. The respect you’ve earned is conditional, and the moment your price tag outweighs your perceived utility, the game changes. They’ll play nice, flatter you, pretend to care—but they’ll sell you out in a heartbeat to protect their own position. And yet, understanding this is not defeat. It’s liberation. Once you see through the facade, you stop wasting energy on misplaced loyalty. You stop trying to win favor in a system that was never built to honor you. You start focusing on what truly matters to you- your work, your craft, your audience. The people who read and buy your work, who resonate with your message, who find value in what you create—they are your true supporters. Not the middle managers. Not the executives. Not the corporate ladder. This shift in mindset these days is especially vital for artists. Too often, creatives are taught to be grateful for any opportunity, to bend for exposure, to accept crumbs in exchange for visibility. But here’s the truth-your art is not a favor. It’s a product of your soul, your labor, your years of experience. You owe no blind allegiance to anyone who doesn’t respect that. I think understanding all of this is clear. Be friendly, do great work, deliver it on time, do not bad mouth others, but lower those expectations and support those like you stepping out doing their own thing, because in the end, that has to be a constant. It's why I do my kickstarters and I am my own boss whenever I can be. I do both, corporate work and my own- but I have no illusions about the system...and knowing this is a freedom in itself to follow. Thanks for listening.

Something I've learned while in law school is about the social construction of crime. I work in a legal clinic on wage theft cases, where employers have "improperly paid" workers by not paying, paying below min wage, withholding overtime, paid sick time, etc. 1/

Thank you @MassAGO & @NatlAssnAttysGn for opposing the budget reconciliation bill's amendment for a 10-year moratorium on AI regulation! We need more AI regulation, not less. Applying an "ask for forgiveness, not permission" philosophy toward infringing copyright is very harmful.

illinoisattorneygeneral.gov/… The letter from State AGs to Congress. State AGs don't vote on this - they urged a "no" vote, because "The impact of such a broad moratorium"would be sweeping and wholly destructive of reasonable state efforts to prevent known harms associated with AI.

What’s a simple and easy to understand explanation of draw calls?

One of the largest things to consider is shared resources. 100 different objects sharing 1 materials is 100 draw calls. 1 object with 100 different materials is 100 draw calls. But chances are pretty high you're gonna need more than 1 object - so if you can get 100 different objects sharing material, you'll have a lot more flexibility in piecing your levels together. Our main architecture set uses 2 materials. Apart from the decals - everything you see here is done with only 2 materials. UV seems dont really matter - but shared UV's obviously let you use shared textures without warping. Where complex UV's DO matter is when you're doing light baking. Light baking cannot share UV's - essentially your engine will do its own unwrap of the object based on your UV's - moving them into a flat pack where no UV's overlap, and each UV island has some padding around it. To get a higher quality light bake - the more complex the 3D shape, the higher res the light baked texture has to be to get good quality. So in that case - it may be better to break a big complex object up into smaller pieces. You increase your draw calls - but you have more control over your light bake. Instancing is also a big thing - less 'bespoke' objects, the better. Lets say you have a bar scene - and you have 100 bottles in the bar. 1 bottle thats repeated only has to load into memory once - and then the rest of its locations are essentially a text file of coordinates. But as soon as that object is modified to the point where it needs a NEW MESH (so transforms are fine, and material changes are fine) - thats FBX becomes a new instance. So in that case - make 1 bottle, duplicate it 100 times - and then use your MATERIAL to give variation. So you could have your material shader colour the bottle based on its location in the world - or perhaps there are different labels in a texture atlas, and it picks a different label based on its rotation. So your 100 bottles with 100 materials can become 1 bottle with 1 material thats instanced 100 times.

What if in 1000 years after social collapse and the electric grid goes down, the only thing that the new society that forms is able to reconstruct of our video games is UV layouts, and they think that staring at millions of grids of squares and triangles was our entertainment

I barely use this site anymore for hopefully obvious reasons. I would like to point out that since the fragile troll billionaire took it over, I've gotten a LOT more spam and bot interaction.

As somewhat a rule of thumb: you can always get away with less polys in Concave elements of the model than in convex ones. For example in the nostrils you can go lower cuz the inside doesnt affect the shilouette of the model. I think red should be less Yellow could be less ;)

Meta illegaly downloaded 80+ terabytes of books from LibGen, Anna's Archive, and Z-library to train their AI models. In 2010, Aaron Swartz downloaded only 70 GBs of articles from JSTOR (0.0875% of Meta). Faced $1 million in fine and 35 years in jail. Took his own life in 2013.

I think the 2010s will be remembered and characterized as when everything went full corporate. The internet was consolidated into a small handful of sites and all media became data driven to a never before realized level. This paved the way for the 2020s, the age of AI slop.
Oh, the 2010s had an aesthetic alright.

Sat with Ted Chiang at @NeurIPSConf lunch ytd & someone in AI brought up democratizing art-making. It was a candid chat so I was like, hey, can I just say something?—I really hate the word "democratize" used this way. Just say "automating art-making." It’s more accurate. 1/

I try not to rag on 90's Sega of America too much, but it needs to be acknowledged how much snake-oil they've peddled over the years when it comes to Sonic's conception. A small thread of total BS stories pushed by SOA's former higher-ups! 🧵
