I was once in a toilet cubicle and could hear a woman waiting outside with hiccups. Trying to be friendly, I smiled and said “You need to hold your breath!” The disgusted look she shot me told me that she didn’t think I was referring to her hiccups!

I suspect most people have little time for John Healey. He may imagine that, as Chancellor, he now occupies some pristine political bubble, safely detached from what went before. But Labour members and the wider public have memories. Healey was not some innocent bystander during the events that brought Keir Starmer’s premiership to an end. He was front and centre in the rebellion against Starmer, resigning from his Government and helping to create the political circumstances in which his position became untenable. Whether one calls that a coup or a revolt, Healey was plainly part of it.
And therein lies the extraordinary irony. Having helped undermine Starmer, Healey now finds himself confronting many of precisely the same economic realities faced by Starmer and Rachel Reeves. Indeed, he has retained Reeves’s fiscal rules and has described the new Government as one of economic continuity.
What is becoming increasingly apparent is that Starmer and Reeves were doing a considerably better job with the economy than much of the mainstream media was prepared to acknowledge at the time. Reeves left behind around £24 billion of fiscal headroom, while the economic position Healey inherited has subsequently been made more difficult by international events, including higher oil prices, inflationary pressures and increased borrowing costs.
That is what makes the present situation so revealing. It is very easy to stand on the sidelines, participate in the removal of a Prime Minister and suggest that everything should have been done differently. It is rather more difficult when you inherit the Treasury, open the books and discover that economic reality has not conveniently changed simply because the occupants of Downing Street have.
Perhaps some of those who were so eager to condemn Starmer and Reeves should now reflect upon their own judgement. The economic record they were so quick to dismiss is beginning to look rather different with the benefit of hindsight.

‘Bringing back hope’ is such vacuous bullshit when you’re importing hundreds and hundreds of young foreign men who treat women like dirt and generally hate everything about us. They are scumbags.
You’re the prime minister. Get off social media and actually DO SOMETHING.

I. Am. Fucking. Furious.
Starmer ousted by a combination of Musk, Reform, compliant media, dodgy polling and ultimately the PLP and that useless shite Burnham.
There has never been such a witch-hunt against a sitting PM.
Heads must roll for this. Across the fucking board.
Labour had an amazing opportunity. Keir Starmer offered that opportunity. Took a failing part & turned ut around in record time.
Won a landslide victory & put decency, integrity back into the labour party.
Rebels worked against him & fcuking won.
We're done. @andyburnham

So Keir Starmer is vindicated then?
Is that what you are saying here @andyburnham ?
Doing politics differently seems to mean taking credit for work that was done in govt while you were Mayor of Gr Manchester.
Nothing to be proud of is it? @UKLabour
I said I’d do politics differently. So these are the facts:
The UK has seen the lowest number of summer small boat arrivals since 2020.
We’ve returned more than 80,000 people with no right to be here – and annual returns are at their highest level since 2016.
There are half the number of asylum seekers in hotels than there were last year.
And today, we go further by bringing the total number of deployed French officers tackling small boat crossings to nearly 1,050.
But I know that we can’t be complacent on this.
Smuggling gangs are constantly adapting their tactics, and we need to respond quickly and stay one step ahead of the criminals facilitating dangerous crossings.
The small boats crisis is a shared European challenge, and no country can solve it alone. Working with France and our international partners, we will restore order and control to our borders and prevent smugglers exploiting vulnerable migrants.

Yet STILL this is not headline news! The polls concerning Starmer are not mentioned, it’s all about Reform. So angry about this, its injustice and the way Burnham and his ghastly cronies jumped on the opportunity to grasp power. Sickening!

So basically Farage rigged polls and Haigh and Burnham seized the opportunity. Right.
Our politics stink.

For years, I thought Nick Clegg’s betrayal and lack of principles would be impossible to beat.
Then came Johnson and Farage, taking the country for a ride with their symphony of lies over Brexit. Surely, I thought, nobody could top that.
Then came @JohnHealey_MP. He resigned as Defence Secretary because Starmer’s government would not commit to spending 3% of GDP on defence by 2030. In his resignation letter, he argued that the target was necessary for Britain’s national security. It was not, apparently, a tactical disagreement or a matter of political preference. It was a matter of principle - serious enough for him to resign and, in fact, help bring down Starmer’s government.
Two months later, Healey is Chancellor of the Exchequer in @andyburnham’s government — and apparently quite prepared to abandon the very commitment over which he resigned.
And then came Burnham making so many U-turns in a single month that even Boris Johnson would look like a model of consistency.
The irony is that Britain had already had enough of this. In 2024, voters chose Starmer precisely because they were exhausted by the circus: the lies, the chaos, the hypocrisy, the politics driven by personal ambition rather than principle. They chose boredom over spectacle. Seriousness over performance.
And now, barely two years later, we are being dragged straight back into the same ethically bankrupt politics we thought we had voted to leave behind.
Perhaps Britain didn’t choose Starmer because it loved him. It chose him because it had had enough of everyone else.
And apparently, that was too much to ask.
What is going on at @LBC today? . @mrjamesob show is jumping from a discussion about Trump to an interview with David Jason! Back and forth. It’s really annoying!
Absolutely, every word of this! @UKLabour
How dare you @UKLabour ..to do what you have done to OUR Party.
Look at the division you have caused by ousting @Keir_Starmer .
The underhandedness.
The secrecy.
The sheer treachery.
@andyburnham @AngelaRayner @louisehaigh @LucyMPowell... Who really do you think you are?
You have taken something people believed in.. something generations of Labour supporters fought for and stood behind.. and ripped it apart from within.
The enemies within.
Class A traitors to the very values you claim to represent.
You didn't just remove a leader you shattered trust.. created division and damaged everything good we had going.
HOW FUCKING DARE YOU.
We will show our Anger..we will not be Silent.
We see what you've done...and
we will not foget it... and we certainly won't be told to simply accept it.
You may have thought you were taking control.
You've actually shown us exactly who you are.

Hey, @andyburnham, a top tip for you.
If you want to win us doubters over, and there are tens of thousands of us, then you might start by acknowledging that Brexit has been a disaster for the UK and carry on with Starmer’s sterling work and align us ever closer with the EU and propose we rejoin the CU and SM as a matter of urgency.
You do know that some 86% of 18-25 year olds, none of whom could vote in the 2016 referendum, want to rejoin the EU entirely, don’t you?
It is a golden opportunity for you.

He conived and plotted for nearly 2 years to get rid of the best Prime Minister we've had in decades so he could steal his job, this is what he does when he gets it. Posts videos of himself laughing and eating pork scratchings on Tik Tok. He's a clown.
Pubs deserve our backing. I’m not sure some of @JohnHealey_MP's choices here do though...
Our 20% cut in business rates will benefit thousands of pubs, clubs and music venues across the country.
