Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs FUJII received a courtesy call from the 43rd and 44th Japanese delegations to the National Model United Nations NY (NMUN NY). He expressed his pleasure that the delegation members have a strong, ongoing interest in the issues facing the international community as well as multilateral diplomatic negotiations, and are actively engaged in these areas, including through the management of the NMUN NY. Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs IKUINA received a courtesy call from Ms. Michelle GYLES-MCDONNOUGH, Executive Director of the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR). The election of the members of the United Nations Human Rights Council was held at the United Nations General Assembly in New York, and Japan was elected as a member, securing 166 votes. As a result of this election, Japan will serve as a member of the Human Rights Council for a period of three years beginning on 1 January 2027 (7th term).

Japan is paying close attention to the situation where the recent rise in tensions between Ethiopia and Eritrea could lead to further instability in the neighboring region, and strongly calls upon both countries to respect each other’s sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity, and to exercise the utmost restraint to de-escalate tensions. 2. Japan strongly urges both Ethiopia and Eritrea to resolve any tensions and conflicts peacefully and diplomatically through dialogue, in line with the spirit of the historic 2018 peace framework between the two countries.

As a part of the additional measures under the IAEA framework that Japan and the IAEA concurred on conducting in September 2024, IAEA officials and experts from third-party laboratories visited Japan and collected samples on October 7. The Government of Japan will continue to maintain close coordination with the IAEA in sharing information with the international community in a highly transparent manner and fostering better understanding of the safety of the discharge of ALPS treated water within both the domestic and international communities.

The IAEA released a report of the interlaboratory comparison (ILC) on the determination of radionuclides in ALPS treated water. The Government of Japan will continue to coordinate with the IAEA, share information transparently, and work to foster further understanding of the safety of the discharge within both the domestic and international communities.

On October 4, FM MOTEGI summoned Mr. George GLASS, Ambassador of the U.S., at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and issued a protest following the arrest of a U.S. marine member on a suspicion of robbery-murder that occurred in Naha city on October 3.
FM MOTEGI lodged a strong protest expressing that the occurrence of such an extremely brutal and heinous incident is extremely regrettable.
FM MOTEGI urged the U.S. side’s full cooperation with the ongoing investigation. He also strongly urged the U.S. side to strengthen discipline and to prevent the recurrence of incidents so that such a tragedy will never be repeated.
