Could you open a mountain hut in the Japanese Alps today? Turns out it’s not as simple as finding a nice patch of mountainside and putting up a building.
Who owns the land? How did the existing huts get there? What happens when one closes for good?

It's multi-day hikes like the Panorama Ginza Traverse that keep me coming back. In fine weather, there's nothing quite like traversing the Jonen Mountains with uninterrupted views across the Azusa Valley to Yarigatake and the magnificent Hotaka Range.

Some controversy on JP X re YAMAP, the premier JP hiking app, to ban the upload of out of season climbs on Mt Fuji, despite them being legal with the submission of a climbing plan. Lots of pissed off Japanese users threatening to cancel their subscriptions!
