Last Wednesday, Ottessa Moshfegh’s Plimpton Prize–winning story “Bettering Myself” found itself at the center of a lawsuit filed against a Florida college by one of its faculty members. Vinita Prabhakar, the English professor in question, is suing for wrongful termination after being fired for teaching the story, alongside works by Hemingway and Carver, in a unit on unlikable narrators. This week, we’ve unlocked “Bettering Myself,” published in issue no. 204 of the Review, from the archive. theparisreview.org/fiction/6…
Today’s audio treat from @SweetTalkProds. Thoroughly recommend The Vicar of Wakefield, if you have not yet encountered in your reading. Thoroughly recommend a STP audio offering when you encounter one! 📻 xxx

The drawing journey so far. I very much think my best drawings are bespectacled males - gives the face a framework for the amateur artist… 👓 xxx

Can’t beat a Caprese with added anchovies on a hot day. Even more lovely, tomatoes and basil homegrown by dear friends. It is a wondrous improvement on a month’s worth of water and rice/oats. Slowly adding back nutrients. And beauty. Never take anything for granted.🍅🌿xxx

Evenings are my preference over morning. Mornings are a bit unforgiving in their humidity and paint palette. Off on a delayed walk to keep the ticker and circulation going, keep the arthritis at bay. Tricking the mind that it is the majestic cool of evening instead… xxx
Today’s spinach omelette brunch dining guests… Phil Collins (excellence) and @amateuradam (cherry on the icing of the excellence). Bravo, @thetimes!🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟xxx
I haven’t managed to walk down the village for months due to various health evils (but have remained c.10k steps a day on home turf). Today I reacquainted myself with the river and purchased some utterly delightful blooms. A rustic Dalloway day!💐xxx

August is August! A monumentally bad year, decade of (un)health. Finally, possibly, sort of clawing my way back into life. And today seems like a good day to give X a whirl again. Hello, friends, everyone! Wishing you all a very bright start to August. xxx
#NewProfilePic… Mainly just to show I’m not dead and I’ve had a haircut. (It’s been a rough year.) Time to stop fighting just for my health and resume the fight to reclaim some art, beauty, fun… Well, I’ve been doing that in my solitude, but it’s far nicer to share the good!xxx
Scenes from very early this morning and lunchtime in #Shropshire / #Wales. Stay safe on the roads and keep warm!❄️xxx
