NVIDIA has released Nemotron 3 Super, a 120B (12B active) open weights reasoning model that scores 36 on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index with a hybrid Mamba-Transformer MoE architecture
We were given access to this model ahead of launch and evaluated it across intelligence, openness, and inference efficiency.
Key takeaways
➤ Combines high openness with strong intelligence: Nemotron 3 Super performs strongly for its size and is substantially more intelligent than any other model with comparable openness
➤ Nemotron 3 Super scored 36 on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index, +17 points ahead of the previous Super release and +12 points from Nemotron 3 Nano. Compared to models in a similar size category, this places it ahead of gpt-oss-120b (33), but behind the recently-released Qwen3.5 122B A10B (42).
➤ Focused on efficient intelligence: we found Nemotron 3 Super to have higher intelligence than gpt-oss-120b while enabling ~10% higher throughput per GPU in a simple but realistic load test
➤ Supported today for fast serverless inference: providers including @DeepInfra and @LightningAI are serving this model at launch with speeds of up to 484 tokens per second
Model details
📝 Nemotron 3 Super has 120.6B total and 12.7B active parameters, along with a 1 million token context window and hybrid reasoning support. It is published with open weights and a permissive license, alongside open training data and methodology disclosure
📐 The model has several design features enabling efficient inference, including using hybrid Mamba-Transformer and LatentMoE architectures, multi-token prediction, and NVFP4 quantized weights
🎯 NVIDIA pre-trained Nemotron 3 Super in (mostly) NVFP4 precision, but moved to BF16 for post-training. Our evaluation scores use the BF16 weights
🧠 We benchmarked Nemotron 3 Super in its highest-effort reasoning mode ("regular"), the most capable of the model's three inference modes (reasoning-off, low-effort, and regular)

I really didn't expect another major open-weight LLM release this December, but here we go: NVIDIA released their new Nemotron 3 series this week.
It comes in 3 sizes:
1. Nano (30B-A3B),
2. Super (100B),
3. and Ultra (500B).
Architecture-wise, the models are a Mixture-of-Experts (MoE) Mamba-Transformer hybrid architecture. As of this morning (Dec 19), only the Nano model has been released as an open-weight model, so this post will focus on that one (shown in my drawing below).
Nemotron 3 Nano (30B-A3B) is a 52-layer hybrid Mamba-Transformer model that interleaves Mamba-2 sequence-modeling blocks with sparse Mixture-of-Experts (MoE) feed-forward layers, and uses self-attention only in a small subset of layers.
There’s a lot going on in the figure above, but in short, the architecture is organized into 13 macro blocks with repeated Mamba-2 → MoE sub-blocks, plus a few Grouped-Query Attention layers. In total, if we multiply the macro- and sub-blocks, there are 52 layers in this architecture.
Regarding the MoE modules, each MoE layer contains 128 experts but activates only 1 shared and 6 routed experts per token.
The Mamba-2 layers would take a whole article itself to explain (perhaps a topic for another time). But for now, conceptually, you can think of them as similar to the Gated DeltaNet approach that Qwen3-Next and Kimi-Linear use, which I covered in my Beyond Standard LLMs article.
The similarity between Gated DeltaNet and Mamba-2 layers is that both replace standard attention with a gated-state-space update. The idea behind this state-space-style module is that it maintains a running hidden state and mixes new inputs via learned gates. In contrast to attention, it scales linearly instead of quadratically with the input sequence length.
What’s actually quite exciting about this architecture is its really good performance compared to pure transformer architectures of similar size (like Qwen3-30B-A3B-Thinking-2507 and GPT-OSS-20B-A4B), while achieving much higher tokens-per-second throughput.
Overall, this is an interesting direction, even more extreme than Qwen3-Next and Kimi-Linear in its use of only a few attention layers. However, one of the strengths of the transformer architecture is its performance at a (really) large scale. I am curious to see how the larger Nemotron 3 Super and especially Ultra will compare to the likes of DeepSeek V3.2.
Just updated the Big LLM Architecture Comparison article...
...it grew quite a bit since the initial version in July 2025, more than doubled!

This is what we've been coking for the last 9 months: make MoEs training goes ~2x faster and ~2x less memory! Highlights:
- MoE typically takes the most time and memory in modern models. Turns out one can mathematically rewrite the MoE backward pass to reduce the activation mem you need to store in the fwd by ~2x, resulting in the same gradients with no extra matmul recomputation. I really like this result, as it combines both algorithmic and systems insights.
- Analyzing bottlenecks in MoE layer leads to a natural optimization stragegy: reduce mem reads/writes as much as possible! Gathering the input for fwd and output grad for bwd can sometimes take as much time as the grouped GEMMs. We fuse gather with grouped GEMM + overlap mem access and compute to make the whole layer goes ~2x faster.
- Computing top-k for expert routing can take surprisingly long, ~15-20% of the whole MoE layer! Standard top-k impl uses radix top-k algo, great for large k but suboptimal for small k. We rewrote top-k using bitonic top-k algo, and it's sometimes 20-30x faster than pytorch's top-k!
All the main kernels are written in Cute-DSL so they should be easy to extend (and install :D). Hopper kernels are out, Blackwell kernels are just about ready. MoE models used to be 2x less hardware-efficient to train, hopefully Sonic-MOE will change that.
🚀SonicMoE🚀: a blazingly-fast MoE implementation optimized for NVIDIA Hopper GPUs. SonicMoE reduces activation memory by 45% and is 1.86x faster on H100 than previous SOTA😃

In collaboration with NVIDIA, the new Nemotron 3 Nano model is fully supported in llama.cpp
Nemotron 3 Nano features an efficient hybrid, Mamba, MoE architecture. It's a promising model, suitable for local AI applications on mid-range hardware. The large context window makes it a great choice for a variety of use cases and applications.
The efficiency of llama.cpp and the unique context management features of the `llama-server` tool allows us to deploy and use this model on a wide-range of hardware. With recent code contributions by engineering teams at NVIDIA and open-source collaborators, we can run this model very efficiently across the entire spectrum of NVIDIA GPUs.
