Norman “Billy Holiday” Pietersen (1966–1987) was a young anti-apartheid activist and uMkhonto we Sizwe (MK) guerrilla operative from Paarl. Pietersen joined the armed wing of the African National Congress (ANC) in 1982 when he was just 16 years old. He was the youngest member of his MK unit. On March 11, 1987, the apartheid-era Riot Squad and security police surrounded a safe house in New Crossroads, Cape Town, where Pietersen was staying. He was shot and killed at close range in his bedroom at 22 years old. Following his execution, police buried him in an unmarked grave in Paarl under police guard. Decades later, his remains were exhumed in March 2016 and finally given a proper, formal reburial in his hometown of Paarl in July 2016. Source: SAHO
