🚨 New release, just in time for #ISTE2026: I've published an interactive 50-state dashboard on K-12 AI policy.
The headline finding? AI policy has officially moved from guidance to governance.
The first wave of this conversation asked whether schools should use AI. The current wave asks something far more important: who is accountable when they do. Who approves the tools? Who sees student data? Who explains model use to parents? Who keeps a human in the decision loop?
A few numbers from the combined scan:
→ 37 states now have published statewide K-12 AI guidance
→ 3 more are in formal development
→ FutureEd is tracking 71 AI-in-education bills across 27 states in 2026
Five building blocks keep showing up across the states: human-centered use, data privacy and vendor limits, AI literacy, district-level policy, and evidence loops. The center of gravity has shifted from "Can teachers use ChatGPT?" to "What system of adult judgment surrounds every AI use?"
Here in Kansas, we're in the minority of states still operating without a statewide framework. But at Wichita Public Schools, we aren't starting from zero — we adopted Board Policy P1231 on Artificial Intelligence in 2025. In a no-guidance state, a board-adopted AI policy stops being a compliance document and becomes operating infrastructure.
The districts that get this right won't be the ones with the longest AI policy. They'll be the ones with the clearest operating loop: a policy floor, a procurement gate, learning design, capacity-building, and an evidence loop.
If I had to compress the entire report into one board-facing sentence:
💬 We are not adopting AI because it is new. We are governing it because it is already here.
That's the posture. Not panic. Not hype. Governance.

Day 2 at #ISTElive is in the books! Big shoutout to @HoldregeDusters for letting me attend. From checking out new EdTech and talking with our vendors to sessions on Google Admin, Canva, and Apple, I learn so much every time I attend!

Have a “no tech day” at school. Interesting to hear at an Ed tech conference.

BREAKING:
Billy Richmond III WILL return to Arkansas next season and play for John Calipari in 2026-2027 per Jon Rothstein #WPS

I am told this won’t be an official state record for two reasons:
1. The Central City facility did not have a wind gauge active/giving proper readings;
2. The sand pit is allegedly uneven, which can add distance to the jumps. #nebpreps @PrepRunningNerd
B-5 district track: @HoldregeDusters’ Mariah Shepherd just broke the state record in the triple jump by 1/2 inch, going 39-4 1/2. #nebpreps
