VIVEK NO YOU'RE A REPUBLICAN NOW!!! YOU CAN'T SAY PEOPLE ARE UNSUCCESSFUL BECAUSE OF A DYSFUNCTIONAL CULTURE, LACK OF POSITIVE ROLE MODELS, AND AN ENTITLED VICTIM MENTALITY!!! NO VIVEK THEY'RE WHITE PEOPLE!!! YOU HAVE TO SAY IT'S STRUCTURAL FORCES AND NOT THEIR FAULT VIVEK!!!
The reason top tech companies often hire foreign-born & first-generation engineers over “native” Americans isn’t because of an innate American IQ deficit (a lazy & wrong explanation). A key part of it comes down to the c-word: culture. Tough questions demand tough answers & if we’re really serious about fixing the problem, we have to confront the TRUTH:
Our American culture has venerated mediocrity over excellence for way too long (at least since the 90s and likely longer). That doesn’t start in college, it starts YOUNG.
A culture that celebrates the prom queen over the math olympiad champ, or the jock over the valedictorian, will not produce the best engineers.
A culture that venerates Cory from “Boy Meets World,” or Zach & Slater over Screech in “Saved by the Bell,” or ‘Stefan’ over Steve Urkel in “Family Matters,” will not produce the best engineers.
(Fact: I know *multiple* sets of immigrant parents in the 90s who actively limited how much their kids could watch those TV shows precisely because they promoted mediocrity…and their kids went on to become wildly successful STEM graduates).
More movies like Whiplash, fewer reruns of “Friends.” More math tutoring, fewer sleepovers. More weekend science competitions, fewer Saturday morning cartoons. More books, less TV. More creating, less “chillin.” More extracurriculars, less “hanging out at the mall.”
Most normal American parents look skeptically at “those kinds of parents.” More normal American kids view such “those kinds of kids” with scorn. If you grow up aspiring to normalcy, normalcy is what you will achieve.
Now close your eyes & visualize which families you knew in the 90s (or even now) who raise their kids according to one model versus the other. Be brutally honest.
“Normalcy” doesn’t cut it in a hyper-competitive global market for technical talent. And if we pretend like it does, we’ll have our asses handed to us by China.
This can be our Sputnik moment. We’ve awaken from slumber before & we can do it again. Trump’s election hopefully marks the beginning of a new golden era in America, but only if our culture fully wakes up. A culture that once again prioritizes achievement over normalcy; excellence over mediocrity; nerdiness over conformity; hard work over laziness.
That’s the work we have cut out for us, rather than wallowing in victimhood & just wishing (or legislating) alternative hiring practices into existence. I’m confident we can do it. 🇺🇸 🇺🇸

I bet this shit goes so hard if you’re stupid
Vivek Ramaswamy's thought experiment for reducing the size of government on @lexfridman:
"Day 1, anybody in the federal bureaucracy who's not elected, whose Social Security number ends in an odd number, you're out. [Day 2], of those who remain, if your Social Security starts in an even number, you're in, and if it starts with an odd number, you're out. That's a 75% reduction."
"Now imagine that you could run that thought experiment at scale, but you had a metric for screening people who had the greatest competence, as well as the greatest commitment and knowledge of the Constitution. That would immediately raise not only the civic character of the United States... it would also stimulate the economy. The regulatory state is like a wet blanket on the economy."
"One of the virtues of that thought experiment is you don't have a bunch of lawsuits you're dealing with about gender discrimination or racial discrimination... [And] the reality is... on Day 3, not a thing will have changed for the ordinary American, other than their government being a lot smaller and more restrained, and spending a lot less money."

Please use racist slur* instead of “racial epithet” — we are not in grad school nor the 2007 AP style book, please speak normal
You know what? After 3 hours of punditry trying to take us back to “Trump is a genius playing 4D chess” - go ahead and lock up the media.

A streamer you’ve never heard of who wasn’t born before any of the Dark Knight movies came out is gonna buy this and hydroplane it into a dog rescue shelter and gain two million subscribers and a Prime sponsorship
Vacillating between two thoughts on Tottenham:
1) the premier league is simply too fast and lethal for Ange’s style of play
2) you could bring in Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp to manage this club like My Two Dads and they’d still be mid table
Kinda thought there would be a lot more drinking liberal tears and a lot less pitifully begging friends not to leave.
What’s funny about the “tariffs drive more American made products” argument is that none of you are ready or willing to pay $120 for a hoodie.
The desire for more at a lower cost is what drove offshore manufacturing - not some weird leftist ideal.

Her key point in the thread: Your online posts and personality are NOT separate from who you are. It all counts. And if you do it on a burner, don’t think the internet isn’t smart enough to figure it out. That counts, too.
