GPT-Rosalind surfaced a new lead for drug discovery: could restoring cholesterol transport protect neurons from degeneration?
DCTN1 is a gene linked to Perry syndrome, a rare neurodegenerative disorder. In mouse-brain data, disrupting it increased expression of genes involved in making cholesterol. GPT-Rosalind suggested a possible explanation: cholesterol may not be reaching where neurons need it.
That gives scientists a specific mechanism to test and, if confirmed, a direction for developing new treatments for neurodegenerative disorders.
With @perturbai_tx and @scrippsresearch, a team of thousands of GPT-Rosalind agents worked in parallel, connecting gene-expression results from millions of mouse brain cells with scientific literature in just 32 minutes. We’re now expanding this collaboration to identify new drug targets.

Doctors are taught to walk into a room, look at the patient and decide how sick they are. Ray Mak, a radiation oncologist at Mass General Brigham in Boston, calls that what it is: a subjective assessment. So his team turned it into a number.
In a study published yesterday in The Lancet Digital Health, they trained an AI on more than 40 million photos of faces and then taught it two things: to estimate a person's biological age, and to predict how long a cancer patient will live from a single photo. Patients in the highest-risk quarter had more than three times the mortality of those in the lowest, even after adjusting for the usual clinical factors. In one test group of 3,820 patients, 64 of the 122 with the highest scores died within ninety days of the picture. Makeup, lighting, smiling or frowning didn't fool it.
It is not ready for the clinic. The cancer model was trained mostly on white patients from the Boston area, and the hospital already has a patent pending. Matthew Liao, a bioethicist at NYU, warns that insurers or employers could use it. Fair point, but that is a question of rules about who gets to use the data, not a reason to stop the science.
I spend my days building medical AI, and what strikes me is the cost. A blood test needs a lab, a nurse and a fridge. A face photo needs a phone that billions of people already carry. Some of the best biomarkers of the next decade may be the ones we already share every day without thinking.
Your face has been telling doctors the truth for centuries. Now someone is finally taking notes.

And I think the reason for that is this: maybe it’s the European way to overthink everything.”

Ah. So they DO have a line you can’t cross.
Same thing in any classroom or school.
There is always a line.
The question is where you draw it.
The Louvre is where France chose to draw the line.
French police warned protesters: "If you approach the Louvre Museum in Paris, we will open fire!"
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
French police issued no such warning to open fire near the Louvre. Coverage of the Oct 17-19 protests details non-lethal crowd control like tear gas amid clashes and a small peaceful student blockade of the museum.

Just realized George Church, who I know well and is the Harvard/MIT genetics legend, CRISPR pioneer, and one of the most important scientists alive, is raising for his gene therapy company Rejuvenate Bio on Wefunder.
This is equity crowdfunding under Regulation CF. Everyday people (not just VCs or the ultra-rich) can invest as little as a few hundred dollars and own actual equity in a company spun out of his lab. One-shot AAV therapies that have already shown heart disease reversal in dogs, with years of safety data, and a path toward humans.
For most of history, this kind of science was locked behind elite institutions and big checks. Now a founder of Church’s stature and his partners are deliberately opening the round to the broader community, and it’s working (oversubscribed, ranked #1 by Kingscrowd).
Rejuvenate Bio spun out of my lab at Harvard, and I co-founded it. One injection reverses cardiac disease in dogs, with three years of safety data and zero safety issues. They’ve raised $3.2M+ and 1,250+ investors are in, and Kingscrowd ranks the round #1 in the country. It closes soon: wefunder.com/rejuvenatebio
