Today, #MichaelBrown should be celebrating his 28th birthday. His life was taken at age 18 by a police officer in Ferguson, Missouri, in 2014. Michael's death spurred one of the largest social justice movements in the United States in the twenty-first century and sparked a nationwide shift in how policing is discussed. Yet, almost a decade later, killings by US law enforcement have only increased, with 2023 being the deadliest year on record. That’s ten years of mothers losing their children at the hands of #police with accountability too often denied. My thoughts go out to Michael's mother, Lezley McSpadden. I cannot imagine the pain of losing a child. But as a fellow mother, I join the call for answers, for truth, and for justice.
