Trump has spent most of his speech casting El-Sayed as an extremist, calling him a "jihadist," and repeating allegations the Rogers campaign has pushed about family connections to the Muslim Brotherhood. El-Sayed has denied having connections to the group and denounced it when asked at a recent campaign rally. Trump also played a video linking El-Sayed to left-wing streamer, Hasan Piker, who was in Michigan earlier this year campaigning with the progressive Democrat.

Republican Conference Chairwoman Lisa McClain takes the stage in Purt Huron, urging attendees to get out and vote in the final 9 days before polls close.

McClain's opening salvo targeted Democrats on voters' tax dollars: "You know what the Democrats want to do? The Democrats will reach into your pockets with both hands, steal your wallet, and tell you they're helping you. Remember that's your money!" The massive crowd was mostly silent after the comment. But the crowd got active and started cheering loudly when McClain pivoted to accusing Democrats of wanting to defund the police.

The McMorran Place in Port Huron is quickly filling up here two hours ahead of the event's start time. I heard from a local radio outlet that one of their buildings overlooks the road near the entrance and there is still a massive line outside. Not sure if all will get a spot inside the building.

On a semi-related note, Minaj gave a 👍 in response to an X post quoting the Washington Examiner story, so that may or may not be confirmation of her appearing later with Trump.

“I met my first billionaire in the seventh grade, and it didn’t go very well.” Maine Senate hopeful Troy Jackson is here at the state’s Democratic Party HQ in Augusta for a canvassing event. He estimates the campaign has made a million voter contacts. Jackson is fresh off an event in nearby Gardiner; he’ll be at others later today in Damariscotta and Lewiston. The former state senator and logger has made himself more accessible to the media than Collins.

The line for Trump's rally in Port Huron, Michigan, on Sunday is wrapping all the way down the street multiple blocks. Some were waiting in line since yesterday afternoon and temperatures were in the high 30s last night. This is a big deal for Port Huron, which is a stones throw form Canada across the St. Clair River and has never before been visited by a sitting U.S. president.

A local told me the city has also struggled since the pandemic, experiencing sharp cost of living increases that make life harder for working class Americans. Port Huron Mayor Anita Ashford told The Detroit Free Press last week that the town has also been hurt by the president's tariffs on Canadian goods (as well as retaliatory tariffs from Canada) and has seen a downturn of Canadian tourists, who had long visited the city's restaurants and shops, amid Trump's trade war with America's northern neighbor.

Remarks are scheduled to begin at 3p.m. today. Trump is here to boost Mike Rogers in his contentious battle for Michigan's open Senate seat against progressive Democrat Abdul El-Sayed, who campaigned with Obama in Detroit last night. Rumor has it Trump is bringing a special guest with him today. The Washington Examiner reported that rapper Nicki Minaj will take the stage, but I could not independently confirm that. Stay tuned.

Obama remains fairly popular among the general public compared other modern presidents, according to a June CNN/SSRS poll. 57% of Americans view him favorably, compared to 30% who view Biden favorably, Trump (34%), George W Bush (42%), and Bill Clinton (38%). Obama is almost universally liked among Democrats as well, with 96% in the poll expressing a favorable opinion of him.

Detroit will be critical to a potential El-Sayed win. His primary opponent Rep. Haley Stevens won Wayne County by a 5.9-percentage-point margin, carrying the metropolitan hub by nearly 300,000 votes. There are 10 days left to go before election day. Today (Oct. 24) is the mandatory start day for early voting in Michigan.

El-Sayed currently holds a narrow 1.9-percentage-point lead over Republican Mike Rogers in RealClearPolitics' polling average.

While Ohio has become somewhat of a stronghold for Republicans in recent years, Michigan has swung back and forth. Trump won the state in 2016, it swung back to Democrats four years later, and then Trump won it again in 2024. Years ago El-Sayed criticized the Obama administration for what he saw as a failure to live up to progressives' expectations but has since attributed those remarks to frustrations when he was young. "I know that President Obama was handed a really difficult set of circumstances, and he did his best," El-Sayed told NBC News earlier this month.

I'm here outside Cass Technical High School in Detroit, Michigan, and in a few hours former President Obama will rally with Democratic candidates Jocelyn Benson (governor) and Abdul El-Sayed (Senate). A marching band greeted some of the attendees waiting in line Saturday afternoon.

Obama was in Cleveland, Ohio, earlier today campaigning with Sherrod Brown who is running to return to the U.S. Senate, and Amy Acton the gubernatorial candidate. In Democrats' efforts to retake the Senate this year, the Michigan and Ohio seats are critical. They must defend Michigan, Georgia, New Hampshire, and Minnesota while flipping four seats from GOP control.
