My baseball coach in West Texas was also my dentist. His son was starting pitcher, but I was much better, and usually stepped in around the 2nd or 3rd inning. Yah. When I got my second ever cavity, my coach / dentist drilled without Novocaine or any numbing solution. When I squirmed, he made fun of me, so I bared down, and mentally fortified myself. I was 12 years old. ..but I’ve never had another cavity.
Sequoia partner Doug Leone reveals he got a root canal with no Novocaine to see if he was really a badass "I had to get a root canal. And I had to go to a meeting right after that. I told the dentist, drill without any Novocaine.” “My whole life, I wanted to see if I was a badass or not. Am I a fake badass that has this envelope nobody could tell, or am I really a badass on the inside?" "He drilled and I jumped. And I told the dentist, I won't move again. And I didn't move again. I used the trick of thinking what it must be like to go to war and lose an arm or two legs. That's pain with consequences. Mine was pain with no consequences." “It’s just nerve endings from there to my brain to my spine, f*ck it I’m not moving.” "I had to go home and change my shirt because I was a puddle of sweat. But I didn't move. And so I love fear. It does wonders for me."

We've been getting a lot of questions lately about how the Internet Archive digitizes books. The short answer: page by page, by hand. You may remember our viral 2021 video of Eliza Zhang scanning a book. That's still how we do it. Meet Eliza, and learn how we scan books: blog.archive.org/2021/02/09/…

If you’re gonna ask AI to do your work, why not ask it to cure cancer instead??
Breaking News: Scientists have used A.I. to create new viruses for the first time, raising hopes for medical advances while also raising the possibility that the technology could someday be used to invent dangerous pathogens. nyti.ms/4bxx7Wy

This is me 20 years ago. I am filming (and sleeping) in this rental house with friends. The Puffy Chair has recently premiered at Sundance. I am in a healthy relationship with the love of my life. After years of relentlessly pushing myself through the struggle, everything is finally working. I look so happy. Everyone can see it and is commenting on it. Not long after this picture is taken is when I have a nervous breakdown. I don't see it coming. It brings me to my knees. Thankfully, the story ends well. I'm able to build myself back up with therapy, medication, exercise, consistent sleep, etc. In some ways, that breakdown was a gift to help me become the person I am now. It certainly made me a kinder, gentler father/husband/friend/collaborator/mentor. But it almost broke me. Today is the last day of Men's Mental Health Month. Please remember that you can't always see what's going on from the outside. Sometimes it looks "happy." Check on your loved ones. Check in with yourself. And if you or someone you know is heading somewhere scary, @988Lifeline is a text/chat/call away.

To be fair to Johnson, he did say people with opposing views should sit down and chat about their politics respectfully. To be fair to Wheaton, he needs the press.

Gene Wilder is being resurrected by AI so that his voice can feature in Netflix's Willy Wonka competition series "The Golden Ticket." “More than five decades after Gene brought Willy Wonka to life, people of all ages and backgrounds around the world continue to find joy, laughter and inspiration in his performance,” Wilde's wife Karen B. Wilder says. “Gene had a remarkable ability to bring humor, wonder and heart into people’s lives, and that connection has endured for generations. We are delighted that ‘Wonka’s The Golden Ticket’ celebrates the warmth and imagination that he brought to the role, introducing that magic to a new generation while honoring the fans who have cherished it for decades.” variety.com/2026/tv/news/gen…

Can someone ask Jeff Bridges if his work as an actor should be free? I think any musician should be able to use an AI generated Jeff Bridges for their music videos. It would save production costs so much (his fee is 7 digits 💰), and obviously Jeff doesn’t mind AI copying artists.
Jeff Bridges shows Theo Von how he uses AI to write and record songs, playing a Suno-generated track about his wife Sue "It's frightening, man. It's very frightening, but it's an amalgamation of all our wisdom, our soul, our things." "All the guys in Nashville are using it now. Instead of going into the studio and paying, you know, $10,000, they can do this for nothing, man."

For the first time yesterday, I experienced the new @alamodrafthouse QR code ordering system and I can tell you it’s truly awful. Rather than making ordering food and drink more efficient, it actually adds steps to the process AND if you want to order additional items during the film you HAVE to open your phone. No, your cute reference to that irony in your How To Alamo video doesn’t negate how ridiculous this is. Please don’t cut corners with your staff and revert back to physical menus and order cards.

This is the inevitable “sea change” of our industry. These are the real filmmakers. No, bloated companies with passionless executives chasing their “billion dollar franchise” will never save us.. they are the ones killing us. These “kids” are not “kids”. They are Filmmakers, With a capital “F”, For “fuck your business as usual, we are the artists of dreams, and the future belongs to us.” I’m so stoked for this!!
Currently, “Backrooms,” a horror film by the 20-year-old director Kane Parsons, is projected to earn an astonishing $70 million dollars in its opening weekend. Remarkably, it isn’t the first time this month that a horror-themed big-screen début from an enviably young YouTuber has surpassed box-office expectations. Or crushed them, in the case of “Obsession,” the shoestring-budgeted first feature from the 26-year-old director and writer Curry Barker, who got his start directing horror and comedy shorts and posting them online. “Might a generation raised on social media, a force often credited with hastening the death of theatrical moviegoing, instead prove to be its salvation?” Justin Chang asks. Read more about the Gen Z directors who may save going to the movies: newyorkermag.visitlink.me/vV…
