A Seattle public records fight that began in 2023 has reached another turning point. Washington's Supreme Court declined to review the city's appeal, leaving a ruling in favor of @BrandiKruse in place.

Congrats to @BrandiKruse & @CADFWashington! Seattle taxpayers should be angry. Besides again breaking disclosure rules, they cost taxpayers a lot more money due to their ideological intransigence.
BREAKING: This morning, the State Supreme Court handed us a long-awaited legal victory, refusing to hear the City of Seattle's desperate request for review of our public records lawsuit dating back to 2023. The City of Seattle has officially run out of lifelines. The City Attorney's Office has needlessly drawn this case out for years, at growing taxpayer expense. As the State Court of Appeals ruled unanimously, the city's failure to adhere to the Public Records Act was not in factual dispute. They failed to follow the law in responding to a request for documents related to former Councilman Andrew Lewis' controversial vote to reject a proposal by the former city attorney to prosecute drug offenses – delaying release until after an election where Lewis was on the ballot. The Public Records Act is a critical tool to ensure government transparency. Seattle should have admitted its error early on and moved on – rather than wage a long and costly legal battle. We offered to settle multiple times over the past three years. I believe the city refused strictly due to animus over my political leanings, not based on their likelihood to prevail on the merits. Without organizations like @CADFWashington, challenging these government abuses would be cost prohibitive. I am grateful for their determination in seeing the case through. Onward.

ANOTHER MAJOR WIN FOR GOVERNMENT ACCOUNTABILITY. ⚖️ The Washington Supreme Court has rejected the City of Seattle's petition for review in CADF's unDivided case, leaving our unanimous Court of Appeals victory intact. And there's more: The City has been ordered to pay attorney fees for the Supreme Court proceedings. This is a significant victory for accountability, transparency, and the rule of law. With the case heading back to the trial court, CADF will pursue additional attorney fees and penalties. Seattle tried to overturn our victory. The state's highest court declined. We're proud of our legal team's work and remain committed to holding government accountable. @BrandiKruse #CADF #waleg

The Legislature doesn't get to rewrite the Washington Constitution. CADF Executive Director Jackson Maynard took to TVW to debate the constitutionality (or lack thereof) of Washington State's new income tax and explain why constitutional protections must take precedence over political priorities. Gee, Jim. Maybe your paper should speak out about the state hiring high priced attorneys hundreds of thousands of dollars to keep me, @choeshow, and @thehoffather from having press passes.

⚖️ CASE UPDATE: North Pearl St. v. Tacoma Today, we argued cross-motions for summary judgment in our challenge to the City of Tacoma’s rental housing regulations. CADF Associate Counsel Sam Spiegelman argued on behalf of our clients, defending the constitutional and statutory protections at the heart of this case. (Learn more: citizenactiondefense.org/cas…). The judge took the matter under advisement, and we expect a ruling in the coming weeks. We’ll keep you updated as the case moves forward. #waleg

This is what defending constitutional rights looks like. When government officials cross the line, someone has to be willing to stand up, fight back, and hold them accountable. CADF takes on these fights at no cost to the people we represent - but we can only do it because of people who believe this work matters. Watch what our plaintiffs had to say. Then help us keep fighting for Washingtonians whose rights are on the line. Donate today at citizenactiondefense.org. #waleg

Yesterday’s I-2066 ruling issued out of the Washington State Supreme Court raises an important question about Washington’s single-subject rule. While CADF was not involved in this case at all, we have litigated this very constitutional question before. In Doriot v. State, we challenged legislation under the same single-subject requirement. The Constitution’s single-subject requirement should mean the same thing whether a law comes from the Legislature or the people. One Constitution. One standard. Period. The Capitol Correspondents Association has settled their part in our press freedom lawsuit, filed on behalf of @BrandiKruse, @thehoffather, and @choeshow. The CCA’s settlement is final. The press conference is over. But the fight? It’s just getting started. #waleg

Great day for the 1st amendment here in WA. Politicians deciding who in the media gets to cover them is the road to totalitarianism. As for their legacy media accomplices, glad to see you fold since you weren't holding any aces. Signed, "The Ringleader" (Yes Jerry, I know you read my stuff...)
🚨BREAKING: The Citizen Action Defense Fund representing @thehoffather, @BrandiKruse, and @choeshow announcing that the Capitol Correspondents Association has officially agreed to step out of the Washington House credentialing in their First Amendment lawsuit. While the CCA will no longer recommend who gets press passes, the legal fight against the House of Representatives itself continues. @CADFWashington
