California's high-speed rail progress report:
Zero miles of high-speed rail built. $543,400 in illegal consultant travel expenses, including trips to nightclubs, tiki bars, and cigar lounges. And a CEO whose contract approval powers just got revoked.

I want to be clear: I would have preferred not to make this video. I am sharing it to explain my upcoming coverage of the race for California state controller, including my efforts to interview incumbent Malia Cohen (D-CA) and why my candidate interview coverage of this office will feature only her challenger, Herb Morgan (R-CA).
I would have preferred to produce a piece giving both candidates equal time. Those are journalistic values that guide me every day. After weeks of outreach and back-and-forth with Cohenās team, a Zoom interview was scheduled, then abruptly canceled by her team. I was told she had no availability to reschedule before the election.
Her team said I could submit written questions for Cohen to answer in writing. I respectfully declined because I wanted voters to hear directly from her on camera, with the opportunity for follow-up questions.
I told her team multiple times I wanted to ensure voters heard her side, her priorities, and answer why she deserves a second term in office. I made every effort to make that happen.
Fairness is always my priority. My goal was to give both candidates the same opportunity to discuss their records, answer meaningful and tough questions, and speak directly to voters. I regret that I could not make that happen, but voters deserve transparency about the process.

Thank you @ZavalaA for having me on.
With the trailing apostrophe too. Truly the pope we need in this world filled with poor grammar.

.@SecRubio: "Too often, these days, we build downwards. We design our standards to ensure that no one will lose. We preoccupy ourselves more with the comfort of the worst than the potential of the best. We hold the most exceptional things among us hostage to the average."
.@SecRubio: "The things we owe to this place as Americans ā and as Westerners ā are actually far, far deeper... What blossomed here in this place was the Western desire to uncover all that ignorance, darkness, and distance had kept hidden from the mind of man."

LA TIMES DEBATE: Becerra backed out, but I showed up anyway.
Surely Xavier will come to the next one. After all, he promised MULTIPLE.
Great conversation. Thank you for the invitation!

We combed through our inboxes and it appears Dr. Richard Panās campaign did not invite KCRA to this event.
This comes as Dr. Panās campaign has not responded to several emails and phone calls from us over the last couple months.
ELECTION 2026: Former Vice President @KamalaHarris is in Sacramento today. She made an appearance at a phone banking event for 6th Congressional District candidate @DrPanMD (D-Sacramento).
During her remarks, Harris criticized Panās opponent, Rep. @KevinKileyCA (I-Rocklin). Harris said she does not believe Kiley, who changed his registration from Republican to independent earlier this year, is a true independent. I will have reaction from Kiley.
Harris added she believes the race between Pan and Kiley is very close.
She also criticized President Donald Trump.
Below is a portion of Harrisā remarks. More to come.

Just a minute into the debate, Becerra describes people making less than $150k a year as "wealthy."
This should be fun.

Everyone wants to talk about the AI boom. I want to talk about what it takes to power it and who pays the price.
There is no question that we want California competing and leading in technology. But data centers can require enormous amounts of electricity, water, and new grid infrastructure.
How much water will they use?
Who pays for the infrastructure?
What are the health and environmental impacts?
Why are NDAs being used in negotiations that could affect a communityās water, power, and infrastructure?
And are local communities being heard before (not after) decisions are made?
Iām pro-technology and pro-innovation. But Iām also a mom who cares about what comes out of our faucets, what our kids breathe, and what shows up on the family utility bill.
We can lead in AI without leaving families to pick up the tab.
What would you want answered before a data center is built in your community?

YOUR TAX DOLLARS PAID FOR THIS.
Investigators found California High-Speed Rail improperly reimbursed travel tied to a gym, nightclub, a cigar lounge and even private planes.
Taxpayers arenāt an ATM. I want receipts, accountability and every improperly spent dollar accounted for.

Twenty-five years ago, our nation stood still as we watched the unimaginable unfold. Today, we remember the nearly 3,000 lives lost, and we honor the first responders who ran toward danger while others ran to safety. Their courage still reminds us what it means to serve something greater than ourselves.
