Classic liberal free-speech advocates are living in a fantasy land of well-behaved citizens with a shared sense of the common good who self-regulate—what they say, what they do, and what they understand as right and wrong. That might have existed in our past, were there was an unwritten code of conduct most everyone accepted, but we are now far more a country of fragmented morality, with less and less shame. So the belief that we can or should tolerate an "anything goes" attitude toward public behavior, including speech, might be intellectually appealing, but it's a recipe for a dysfunctional society with more chaos, more anarchy, and more moral relativism. It's a nice attitude to have if you're removed from the fallout (say, in another country), but one with blinders on about our culture, where the sole moral authority has become the state/private companies, who have rushed in to fill the vacuum. Or to put it another way, Free-speech absolutist rarely appreciate the cultural scaffolding holding societies together -- which is not the law, but social pressure
