Children are wards, not property, and the role of a parent is to teach them how to exercise their own self-ownership. This happens gradually, throughout their entire life, until adulthood.

If you are offended by people of any age setting boundaries for their own bodies, you really need to ask yourself why you are so fond of coercion.
If children have the option to say “no” to you when you ask for a hug, without backlash or worry about hurting your feelings, you are helping them become more comfortable saying “no” in the future, when the stakes are much higher.
