My PhD advisor once told me to think bigger. Six months later, he suggested narrowing the scope. This was my introduction to academic leadership.

Suspending Virginia’s gas and diesel tax would give working families some much needed breathing room. Last week, we called for a special session to provide 90 days of relief at the pump. Helping hardworking Virginians shouldn’t be a partisan issue. Let’s make it happen.

250 years ago today, Virginia’s first General Assembly convened here in Williamsburg. Senator Mark Peake and I had the opportunity to be here today at the Capitol, standing where generations of Virginians helped shape the Commonwealth we know today. What a special reminder of the history we inherit and the responsibility we have to carry it forward.

We're calling on Governor Spanberger to convene a special session and give Virginians 90 days of relief from the gas and diesel tax. Let's give working families some breathing room at the pump. The money is there. Let’s get it done.

Governor Allen and I enjoyed spending time with students in Dr. Ferdon’s GOVT 200 class at Liberty University last Friday. We had a great conversation about leadership, public service, and state government. I especially appreciated the thoughtful questions from the students. Thank you to Professor Jack Collins for the invitation and to the Helms School of Government for the warm welcome!

Kathryn and I have lived in the same house in Montross since 1985.🏡 It is where we raised our children and where we now enjoy watching our grandchildren grow up.  It is where we have celebrated milestones, weathered challenges, built friendships, attended church, and become part of a community we have called home for more than four decades. I drive two hours each way to Washington — because I refuse to lose touch with the people I represent. 🛣️ Washington is where I work. Virginia is home. I believe that distinction matters.  #VA01

🚨VOTE N🚫: The Chapel’s Pastor Brandon Samuel and his wife, Katie, speak from the heart about two PROPOSED state constitutional amendments on Virginia's ballot. Speaking to a congregation of thousands in Chesterfield County, they briefly share the biblical principles that inspire a "NO Vote" on Virginia's abortion & marriage constitutional amendments:

If you’re young today, it’s hard to imagine September 11th as anything other than history. For so many, there is no memory of watching it happen or realizing that an ordinary Tuesday morning had suddenly changed our country forever. It was a day of tremendous loss. Nearly 3,000 people went to work, boarded an airplane, or simply went about their morning and never came home. But when I think about September 11th, I also think about what happened next. Americans ran toward danger to help strangers. Communities gathered to pray. Flags appeared on front porches. And at a moment when our country had every reason to be afraid, the American people showed extraordinary courage and resolve. A generation has grown up in the twenty-five years since. Fewer Americans have their own memories of that day, and it falls to us to make sure they know what happened, who we lost, and how America responded. We remember those who never came home. We remember those who ran toward danger. And we remember what Americans are capable of when we stand together. May God bless their families, and may God bless the United States of America. 🇺🇸

I’ve had the opportunity to volunteer at Lynchburg Daily Bread a number of times over the years, and I’m always impressed by their ability to meet the needs of our community. Glad to serve meals again today and thankful for all they do for our neighbors every single day!

"Mr. Peters opened the door, and we made it possible for him to do that. So, since then, you know, not only folks here in the Commonwealth but people live outside of the Commonwealth who were born here in Virginia now have that ability to request the original birth certificate. Hundreds of people have written to me and said, Mr. Walker, thank you so much," Walker said. wset.com/news/local/adoptee-…

In 1988 Dolly Parton pulled every 7th and 8th grader in Sevier County into a room and told them to pick a buddy. She made them sign a contract.. if BOTH graduate, she hands you both $500. One fails, nobody gets paid. The county dropout rate went from 35% to 6%. She handed out the checks herself. In 1989 she offered $500 to every kid in the county who wanted to go to the local college. When Gatlinburg burned in 2016, she sent 900 families $1,000 a month for six months. You've probably heard that part. Here's the part you haven't: The fund raised more than expected, so she showed up in May and handed every one of those families another $5,000 on top. Then she quietly put $3 million into the recovery group that handles the years after the news trucks leave. She built her county an entire hospital. She played a benefit concert in 2007, Dollywood and the Stampede matched it, and LeConte Medical Center opened in 2010 with a birthing unit and a women's center in it. In 2022 she started covering 100% of tuition, books, and fees for Dollywood employees. Full-time, part-time, AND seasonal. In 1991 she paid for a bald eagle sanctuary because the birds couldn't be released back into the wild, no press release. And when Hurricane Helene came through here in Western North Carolina, she wrote a personal check for $1 million and her companies matched it. She didn't owe North Carolina anything, but she helped us anyway. She started the Imagination Library because her daddy couldn't read or write. Before he passed, he told her it was the most important thing she ever did. Rest in Peace, Dolly 🇺🇸

For months, Democrats in Richmond have tried to convince Virginians that financial disaster was around the corner. We kept hearing the sky was falling, but the revenue report today said otherwise. Today, at Governor Spanberger’s presentation to the Joint Money Committees, we learned that General Fund revenues grew by $2.1 billion and came in nearly $939 million above forecast. Virginia didn’t stumble into this position. Governor Youngkin left the Commonwealth with strong reserves, conservative revenue forecasts, and years of prudent budgeting that returned billions of dollars to taxpayers while still funding our priorities. Now comes the real test: will Richmond take another strong revenue year as a free pass to create even more permanent spending, or will we remember whose money this is in the first place? As we head into budget season, real tax relief needs to be at the top of the agenda. When Richmond collects far more than expected, we should be asking how much we can return to the taxpayers who earned it... not how quickly we can spend it.
