Shameless plug for our volunteer initiative, but evidence like this highlights the value of citizen science in detecting key river pressures and measuring the impacts it’s having on ecosystem health. Such data is critical for helping inform and target management interventions
V. sad to see severe sewage pollution in the R. Cole at Springfield today. The @stwater pollution hotline have sent out investigators, who say a 3rd party has illegally plumbed in domestic outlets to the rain water pipe (not the foul pipe). More investigations next week.

Citizen science results will help characterise ecosystem health and quantify pressures/impacts in one of the UK’s most urbanised catchments. We are also working with social scientists to explore plural forms of knowledge and values volunteers hold towards their local rivers

In the absence of any Government strategy on chalk streams, we’ve written to Ministers setting out how these globally-rare habitats could be better protected through the planning system. (1/2) @HantsIWWildlife @BBOWT @WiltsWildlife @WildlifeTrusts wildlifetrusts.org/news/open…

Loss and damage resulting from climate change is not an abstract concept: It means the loss of lives, homes, jobs, and ecosystems. There is an urgent need to acknowledge and address the impacts of the climate crisis. via @UNDPClimate

How does human activity interact with drought in chalk streams? New paper by me, @rstubbington, @Judy_E12 et al. out in @JAppliedEcology ➡️ Poorer water quality and abstraction exacerbate drought impacts on invertebrate communities 🐌🪳🪱
Human impacts affect how river ecosystems respond to hydrological drought 🫧 Using long-term data describing 2500 macroinvertebrate assemblages in England’s chalk streams, we find that poor water quality and abstraction exacerbate drought impacts 📊 🔗 doi.org/10.1111/1365-2664.14…

I've loved being involved in a special issue (being released later this year) on river restoration following @The_RRC's scientific conference last year #sarr23. Beyond editing , I'm delighted to say I've had 2 manuscripts published for this today...🧵
