IR images often make hurricanes/typhoons look larger than they are at the surface. Based on this image, you'd bet money the S end of Guam was getting raked by #Typhoon #CHAMPI's eyewall. Nope. It was a clean miss.

Rivers drawn in fog this morning 🌫️👀 🛰️ From space, the river valleys of West Virginia, eastern Ohio and western Pennsylvania lit up white after sunrise 🌙 Clear skies and calm winds overnight let cold air sink and pool in the valleys 💧 Moisture near the rivers condensed into dense fog, under a quarter mile at times ☀️ Then watch it burn off as the sun climbs

164 knots on the latest run Seems very likely that we will see a very strong 2nd peak
I mean there’s no way this isn’t another high end Cat 5 peak It’s moving into warmer waters, outflow still looks extraordinary and the HAFS-A has a 160 knot peak on Tuesday

Spooky natural history 🧟 Dead man’s fingers (Xylaria polymorpha) Often bent and swollen, as if afflicted with arthritis, these fungal growths bear an uncanny resemblance to their namesake where they grow at the base of dead and dying plants. Read more: floridamuseum.ufl.edu/scienc…

Lots of moisture on tap for the mountains during the second half of this week, especially over the San Juans. We'll be watching for any potential flooding concerns, so keep an eye out for updates! #cowx

West Coast Weather Forecast 10/18/2026; CA Storm system on Wednesday, More Active Pattern for the Northwest towards the end of Oct? Models are still confident in rain showers for most of CA on Wednesday, meaning most of the state will see the first measurable rainfall of the season. Rainfall totals will be tricky. This appears to be a convective cut-off low type system, so some locations could see little rainfall while others see intense downpours and maybe thunder. Models have shown pop-up style rainfall rather than light to moderate rain progressing along a front, and the rain showers could move east to west in Central CA/SF Bay Area. Both are pretty uncharacteristic of CA storms, but not unheard of in October. CAPE (Convective Available Potential Energy) values look kind of decent by CA standards, and are concentrated on the Central/Southern coast at the moment. Isolated thunderstorms could develop there on Wednesday afternoon, particularly south of Monterey on the CA coast. In the long term, the pattern still looks active on the west coast. In fact, the activity may expand northward into the Pacific Northwest. After a hot, dry, and fire-prone autumn so far there, it’s fortunate to see less of a strong ridge signal as we head into November. To be clear, this doesn’t look like an extremely stormy pattern (it’s a bit hard to tell at the moment), but I think they’ll see some rain in the next few weeks, including eastern OR/WA, which desperately needs it given the recent drought and wildfire situation.

#Typhoon #Champi has weakened over the past few hours as the ULAC it will align with later down the line imparted some N-rly shear on the system, coupled with the onset of an EWRC. Conditions should improve into today, with a second peak likely.

What’s it like to be just 4 miles (6.4 km) away from #Starship V3!!! Notice how long it takes for the sound to hit and then watch how much stuff is shaking. Even image optical stabilizer can’t keep up! (And yes I’m a bit bummed I blocked so much of it)

By now, it's no secret that AI models like @GoogleDeepMind are revolutionizing hurricane forecasts. But not all AI hurricane models are created equal. In new comprehensive analyses, I discuss where the AI models landed for Isaias and the season so far. ⬇️ michaelrlowry.substack.com/p…

October 16, 1988: A strong tornado struck north of Nappanee, Indiana. The F2 tracked for 6 miles, narrowly missing a high school at one point along the path. In total, 21 homes were damaged or destroyed and around half a million dollars in damage was produced. #wxhistory

I made a radar loop of the heavy rain event across Texas/Oklahoma/Kansas earlier this week. Many areas along the I-40 corridor west of OKC received 4 inches of rain, and the town of Hinton had a total above 11 inches!

IDK what that severe stuff is tapping into or just the forcing only from the cold front for the MA stuff but that's crazy work and that should be pretty capped and even elevated I am not seeing much. That's some crazy energy transferring from the upper levels to the SFC then and even the shit heading into CT.
Fuck you Massachusetts....always when shit clears the Hudson Valley and Berkshires it pops like that. Well MA chasers and even CT people will be all over this.

Several Future AOI Signals: consensus still remains on far E WPAC-CPAC TC to develop; guidance also rehints at BOB AOI (signal seen before GDM - hence no need for model over-reliance) potential first NIO name; Vance another hurricane signal; ATL SS AOI; a CPAC TL maybe TD signal.

Forecast remains on track, although front timing appears to have slowed/trended westward somewhat. Damaging straight-line winds are the primary threat. Non-zero tornado threat remains; SPC D2 outlook and StormNetAI tornado probabilities agree on eastern PA as greatest risk.
Low-topped convective line appears likely Friday ahead of a cold front. At the least, this may pose a straight-line wind threat. Trends in LL shear should be monitored re QLCS tor threat. Strong LL shear is present, but line-normal comp. does not seem exceeding large atm.
