The @GarydotClub hack sucks. No question about that. And do I agree with the direction things are going? Not entirely. As someone who holds a lot of community assets, I’m just as invested in what happens next as anyone else.
I understand why people are frustrated, and I think a lot of that frustration is justified. People invested their time, money, and trust into this ecosystem, and it’s reasonable to expect more than what we’re getting right now.
But I also think this situation highlights a much bigger problem. You can’t build an entire ecosystem on one person’s shoulders.
Gary has built a lot of tools and utility over the years. Some succeeded, some failed. I’ve contributed my own utility as well, and I can tell you from experience that it gets exhausting when you’re one of the few people consistently building things.
That’s not an excuse for what’s happened, and it doesn’t mean Gary is above criticism. But it does highlight why relying on one person to provide all the value in an ecosystem isn’t sustainable.
So where do we go from here? I see three options.
1. Sit around waiting for Gary to build more utility, even though plenty of people were already unhappy with what was being offered.
2. Start building our own utility and give these community assets value beyond what one person provides.
3. Decide it’s no longer worth participating and move on.
Personally, I still plan to offer Giraffe perks through my site. They might be small, but I believe even small contributions add up when more people get involved.
I’m not telling anyone how they should feel or what they should do with their assets. Everyone has to make that decision for themselves.
But if we’re going to call this a community-driven ecosystem, then the community needs to play a meaningful role in building it.
That doesn’t absolve Gary of responsibility. It just means our future shouldn’t depend entirely on him.
