what happened to the 2023 @MoJGovUK consultation on open justice? no sign of a report as yet, but an update from Government via a PQ. TL;DR: considering next steps courtobservers.org/2024/11/0…
thanks for the terrific event and initiative, great to hear the student responses too. We'll have an ad hoc discussion group @sussexlaw next month for students and staff / cc. @balsokhibulley
Replying to @sussexlibrary
Hearing him speak today, it was clear how much his reporting has shaped public understanding of these pivotal moments. He is a witness to history; bringing a depth and humanity to these stories. Today’s conversation was a powerful reminder of why this work matters. #SussexBigRead
Enjoyed a pre-term mini-tour: Dundee in glorious sunshine on Wednesday (thank you to Prof Angela Daly and colleagues @lrcfs @LawDundee & the Justice and Power research theme @dundeeuni )
then to London to join a wonderful event marking 20 years since landmark decision in Campbell v MGN Ltd, with the great and the good of media/information law practice and research (thank you Jeevan Hariharan, @paulwragg78, @ElizaBechtold & Matrix Chambers)

I crowdsourced this reading list... for new [and old] law students who want to broaden their horizons and reflect on the ambivalent nature law itself, having both the potential for freedom & unfreedom.

what a brilliant campaign and outcome. the 'turning point' was the Scottish government amending funding regulations to allow these students to be treated as home students, meaning they are eligible for free tuition lindanorgrovefoundation.org/…

"All of us" won't fit in a room with the @peterkyle and @matthewclifford so who *should* be included in @SciTechgovuk roundtables to represent all our interests as they decide the future of AI?
What even is civil society and why should anyone listen to them?
Let's go.
I don't think 'all of us' will fit in the room with the secretary of state though, so this definition doesnt really help?
And if 'civil society' is all of us, then it's the electorate. So my point stands - who are these 'civil society' figures that you insist be in all these meetings? Who elects/chooses them? How do we know they are broadly representative of the population in terms of values and opinions?
this year's conference looking great & happily I think my teaching schedule might allow me to attend in person this year. The annual lecture will be given by danah boyd danah.org/

A marvellous piece observing the observers. Captures the colour and character of court reporting, as well as some of the tensions to consider ("I muttered something about second chances")
This is beautifully written and very poignant. Tells a story of why there is so much more to transparency than the relaxation of reporting restrictions (as in the family court)….and why it matters that we keep trying #OpenJustice #Transparency
a brilliant initiative & enjoying my copy! copies will be available @sussexlaw for colleagues to enjoy and discuss with students

A call of interest for the new Stakeholder Committee for the @judiciaryUK Transparency and Open Justice Board judiciary.uk/call-for-intere… It's advertised as 'media stakeholder' committee but my understanding is that civil soc and academic observers could put themselves forward too

🎉This is a huge win for our client who won't be sent to Rwanda - his claim will be processed in the UK.
But what about the other 50,000 still in limbo and why does the Home Sec. appear to have left open possibility that flights could still take place?
