President Trump is claiming victory in trade talks with China, but Chinese leader Xi Jinping appears to be walking with a lot of what he wanted.
Xi used soybean purchase and rare earth restriction to extract concessions from the U.S. And it worked.
Trump is lowering of tariffs by 10%. But more importantly, Xi got Trump to delay U.S. export controls that would have significantly expanded the number of Chinese companies barred from accessing American technology, according to China’s Ministry of Commerce.
Beijing also says the US has agreed to suspend port fees on Chinese ships.
China’s own concessions were simply returning things to how they were before: repurchasing soybeans and holding off in restricting rare earth minerals.
And on TikTok, no deal was finalized.
For Xi, the tentative truce represents a strategic win – securing relief from some of Washington’s toughest trade measures while giving up little in return.
