“Black Charlottesville purchases property, creates home places, builds grocery stores, churches, and community aid societies at a rapid rate, facilitating this ascendancy for each other—that is what ‘Toward a Lineage of Self’ really articulates.” c-ville.com/jsaahc-adds-high…

Feels as good a time as any to let you know that the exhibition going up at @JSAAHC next month has an entire section on how early 20th century UVA's Board of Visitors, its Foundation, and profs perpetuated racist housing and land-use practices locally, at every level.
Disappointing news from @uva. When I was Historian of the UGS, I pushed for a more complete and accurate account of UVA's history--even the parts we'd rather forget. I'll always be proud of the work we did. It was--& continues to be--the right thing to do. cavalierdaily.com/article/20…

We just ran the numbers. From 1903-1933 Charlottesville banks leant White residents $200K+ to buy racially restricted properties. Today, adjusted for purchasing power, this is equivalent to investing $19.8 million into exclusively White communities. More coming soon...

OTD: July 10, 1902 A new Virginia State Constitution was enacted into law, imposing a poll tax on Virginia voters, as well as property + literacy requirements. The new constitution reduced the eligible Black voting population by 90%. In 1966 SCOTUS banned Virginia's poll tax.
