Why do some people remain psychologically resilient after trauma, while others develop PTSD? A new study from Mount Sinai published in Biological Psychiatry: Cognitive Neuroscience and Neuroimaging, points to a potential answer: how the brain anticipates positive experiences. Researchers examined brain activity approximately two decades after 9/11 among World Trade Center rescue and recovery workers. Using fMRI, they found that highly resilient responders — those with substantial exposure to traumatic elements of the attacks — showed significantly stronger activity in brain regions involved in reward anticipation compared to both those with chronic PTSD and those with lower levels of WTC exposure. The findings suggest that the brain's ability to detect and respond to positive information may help buffer the effects of trauma exposure, and point to potential new targets for PTSD treatment. Excited about this new paper from our group: 7T MRI of the locus coeruleus in #anxiety disorders, #PTSD, and healthy adults. The more anxious arousal, the stronger the LC–dACC coupling; diagnostic category showed no effect. My takeaway: Symptoms, not labels, map onto brain circuits. nature.com/articles/s41398-0…

Check out our new protocol paper 🍇🧠! We designed a clinical trial testing for the first time whether a polyphenol-rich #natural product (BDPP) can boost #stress #resilience and testing absorption, inflammation, and response to a validated lab stress test. Early-phase work, big potential. w/ @Pasing01 @IcahnMountSinai @RutgersU. Results coming soon! Free article here: authors.elsevier.com/a/1nPTx…

In the latest JCP Podcast, Joseph Goldberg, MD — who led ASCP's 45-member deprescribing task force — argues that stopping a medication deserves the same rigor as starting one, with a simple framework: treat every drug like an employee due for a performance review. He covers when "treatment resistance" is really nonadherence, valproate in women of reproductive potential, the psychology of stopping, and hyperbolic tapering. Excited to share this work from the amazing team at @IcahnMountSinai @MountSinaiNYC illuminating the brain dynamics underlying #depression. Major depressive disorder remains one of the leading causes of suffering worldwide. Our new work in @NatureComms uses advanced brain imaging and mathematical modeling to better understand how the depressed brain may become trapped in maladaptive patterns. The ultimate goal of our work is improving #antidepressant #treatment outcome patients.

Same problem is plaguing psychiatry, psychology, etc. A model may predictably describe a phenomenon, but that doesn’t mean that it has anything to do with the cause or mechanism of that phenomenon.
Here is the key problem in the recent paper arguing that neurons are simple. It is the same logical problem plaguing much of neuroscience.
