A little over a year ago I wrote a piece about how Joe Biden shifted "left." Re-upping it today because it has some relevant lessons for newly-elected govs and members of Congress, especially as they start staffing up. My top pieces of advice (applies to Congress too):

Putting it out there: 9 new senators, 50+ new House members, and ~20 presidential campaigns will all be staffing up over the next year. If you're young and want to work in Democratic politics, there won't be a much better time to jump in.

Some Democratic operatives believe that the through-line of their wins was simply CHANGE— and that the next presidential nominee should represent a new direction more than any policy, identity or ideology.
New w/ @hollyotterbein Dems did so well, every faction of the party (and every potential candidate) came away w/ an electability argument. Both things are true: the left-wing/DSA won more races than ever the bulk of the wave was more moderate Dems axios.com/2026/11/05/democra…

In races called, 17 senators are being replaced, already the biggest turnover in the chamber since 1980. The departing senators average age is 70, their replacements 55. The number of senators under 50 nearly doubles, from 8 to 15.

Monumental.
2028 will be the first prez election in 20 years where Republicans control neither House of Congress -- ie, no real oversight powers. This has mattered before. No Benghazi committee in 2014, no Hillary email server. In 2020, Senate Rs used oversight powers to advance the Hunter laptop story. In 2024, House Rs used the impeachment inquiry to grind down Biden. Of course, Trump runs Main Justice for the next two years, and it's been ready and willing to probe Democrats. But the days of James Comer reading an NYT story and launching an investigation are over, in two months.

A lotta great Dem campaign staffers out there who have now seen first-hand the kind of messaging it takes to win in very hard places…bodes well for 2028!

Winning Michigan by seven is just a lot less impressive than winning NC by 20 or Ohio or Kansas (!) by 5 or Iowa and South Carolina by 4 or Texas (!) by 12 and you should not trust people who can’t acknowledge the plain truth about this. He does look good compared to Flanagan!

If the remaining results go as expected, Democrats will hold governorships in states totaling 392 electoral votes.

Swing Voters Are Real
All the demographic destiny stuff continues to be loser talk from the 2000s. In the Trump era we've had massive swings in voting behavior by education, age, race, religion, and then back again, we've had a Texas R+2, a Texas R+14, and a Texas D+11 election, it's all up for grabs.

Forever crazy that Fox News hosts just say live on-air “Call in Mr. President, we’d love to have you.” and then twenty minutes later he just calls in Do we think he has a special number to call so they know it’s him?

The answer is yes: Beau Bayh wins in Indiana—the first time a Democrat has won statewide in the Hoosier state in 14 years. My @POLITICOMag profile from April. You’re gonna want to get to know Beau. politico.com/news/magazine/2…

Say what you want about Schumer: He's presided over a 14-seat flip of Senate seats as DSCC chair in 06/08 and a generational sweep of red state Senate seats as leader in 2026. Wild.
