Meta is reportedly calling its massive data centers "experimental" to claim a research tax credit. Try telling the IRS your kitchen renovation was a science project. Or your new car was a lab experiment. That's a rigged tax code.

Listening to David Axelrod tell @jonfavs that corruption arguments against Susan Collins are inadvisable demonstrates that a perpetual class of affluent consultants are ill-suited to a populist moment with widespread cynicism. Elites can't see each other's corruption!

BREAKING: A KC Star investigation couldn’t find a single other medical provider in Kansas who charged 18% interest on medical debt - even Marshall’s own lawyer admits Marshall personally set that rate and was probably the only one to do so in the state!

i find the AI discourse around a (as-yet-hypothetical) cure for cancer a little repulsive. the combination of these people transparently being more interested in deepfakes of women; and the predatory, intrinsically emotionally manipulative quality of promising a cure is loathsome

My interview with @Tim_Walz is getting lots of attention for what he said about the genocide & @Liz_Cheney. But this comment is just as newsy and he’s absolutely right: If Dems repeat their betrayals, they’ll create conditions for a worse version of Trump

You don’t solve poverty by teaching everyone to become millionaires. You solve poverty by building an economy where ordinary work can produce a decent life.

Whenever some tech bro talks about future abundance due to AI, remember this. They will not give up (or give us) anything unless there is a catastrophe that affects them at an existential level too, & even then they’ll return us to “normal” ASAP to get their money growing faster:
The quicker we forget the pandemic the quicker we forget how easy it was for governments to ban evictions, forbid creditors from chasing debtors, find the homeless homes, provide a universal basic income and more. All the things we are told are impossible

It's not a communication issue. You are just wrong... the only source of power is our ability to collectively withhold labor, refuse orders, resist government. If these companies are remotely successful we will have no individual or collective influence over our own lives.
In this interview I tried to argue that a post-scarcity society will benefit working people. It was largely a rhetorical failure. People don’t trust that the benefits will be distributed, and tech optimists have to fix this communications issue.

Just saw someone say their AI runs their fantasy football team and I can’t stop laughing. Like, I’m sure everyone’s doing it or something but it’s very funny to me that pretending to be a team manager was so hard that you needed to pretend to pretend to be a team manager

Because so much of the debate about AI and jobs is driven by fears of outright replacement, there's a much more likely way in which AI could make work worse that isn't getting much attention. Here's my case: 1) A growing share of knowledge workers are managers of AI agents rather than doing the work themselves. 2) Being a manager (of humans) actually kinda sucks. You don't get to practice the craft you trained for; being responsible for others' mistakes is super stressful; and your attention gets split between dozens of things. 3) But we managers don't get to complain — it's higher pay and higher status, and mentoring people and watching them succeed is incredibly gratifying. We chose to get promoted. 4) Being a manager of AI brings all of the negatives without any of the positives. When everyone is a manager, it's not high pay / high status. And the role change is forced upon you. What am I missing?

In a world gone this crazy, I find myself agreeing with Bill mf Gates
Ezra Klein asked Bill Gates whether normal corporate incentives are enough to handle AI risks. Gates doesn’t mince words:

There is something so unbelievably bleak about an article that calmly walks readers through how to navigate being laid off after 50, losing your health insurance, and somehow surviving the years until Medicare. What a broken country.

“one of the 21st century’s great tragedies…” Is not rising homelessness and hunger, not the continued degradation of our ecologies, not the rise of authoritarians eager to kill and cage folks abroad and at home No, no. It’s a research paper with a catchy conceptual framing
one of the 21st century's great tragedies is that millions of smart people were convinced to bury their heads in the sand by either stochastic parrots discourse or Zitron-style capabilities denialism and haven't updated based on new evidence. nature is healing but it's so late.

Deterrence is a reactive solution. What about a proactive one? Like why the fuck do these irresponsible weirdos have access to infinite capital to burn through in the first place?
It’s simple: if AI CEOs knew they are under threat of being jailed and their companies bankrupted if they harm people, that creates a deterrent to their most dangerous experiments. They might refrain from deploying/creating the most reckless/dangerous technologies if that deterrent existed right now. That deterrent unfortunately doesn’t exist right now because the government doesn’t enforce the law against tech billionaires, which is bad.

Ed reform is hard partly because you have to contend with those who disagree with the premise that all kids have the same inherent worth. It’s also why health care reform is hard, minimum wage reform is hard, why meaningful shared prosperity and ai will be hard
