He wrote a love song with her name as the title. Eight years later, he lost her on a quiet Tennessee road.
Her name was Claudette.
Roy Orbison met her when they were young, and he fell so hard that he wrote a song for her, simply called "Claudette." The Everly Brothers recorded it in 1958. Imagine the whole world singing your name because someone loved you that much.
But their story wasn't a fairy tale.
By 1964, the pressure of fame had pulled them apart, and they divorced. Yet something kept drawing them back to each other. In 1965, they did something few couples ever do. They married each other again.
It was a second chance. A fresh start.
It lasted only months.
On June 6, 1966, Roy and Claudette were riding their motorcycles home to Hendersonville, Tennessee. It should have been an ordinary afternoon. Then a truck pulled out in front of her. There was no time to stop.
Claudette was 24 years old.
Roy kept working, because he didn't know what else to do. He went back out on the road and sang the sad songs the world loved him for, songs that now felt painfully true.
Two years later, in September 1968, he was touring in England when the phone rang.
His home in Hendersonville was on fire.
His two oldest boys, Roy DeWayne, 10, and Anthony, 6, were gone. Only his youngest, little Wesley, survived.
In just over two years, Roy had lost his wife and two of his children.
He could never bring himself to rebuild on that land. Instead, he sold it to his close friend Johnny Cash. Cash didn't build a house there. He planted a fruit orchard, so that something living and growing would stand where so much had been lost.
Roy didn't give up on life. He married again, to a woman named Barbara, and they raised two more sons. His career faded for years, but he kept singing.
Then, in the late 1980s, the world rediscovered him. Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Tom Petty, and Jeff Lynne invited him into a band called the Traveling Wilburys. A new generation fell in love with that voice all over again.
He had finally come back all the way.
On December 6, 1988, Roy Orbison died of a heart attack. He was 52. Just weeks later, his new album became one of the biggest successes of his life. He never got to see it.
He spent his life singing about heartbreak. Few people knew how much of it he had actually lived.
Sometimes the people who sing the saddest songs aren't performing. They're surviving.
And sometimes, from the hardest ground, an orchard still grows 🌳 💔

🚨 HOME DEFENSE AND 2ND AMENDMENT DEBATE:
In Bingham County, Idaho, 85-year-old Christine Jenneiahn defended her home after a masked intruder broke in, struck her over the head with a flashlight, handcuffed her to a chair, and threatened her disabled son. Despite being bound and injured, Christine managed to maneuver her chair to her bed, retrieve a .357 Magnum from under her pillow, and fatally shoot the intruder when he returned to her room. Idaho prosecutors subsequently ruled the shooting entirely justified under the state's self-defense laws.
Do you support the absolute right of homeowners to use deadly force to defend themselves and their families from intruders?
YES or NO? 👇
